Author: When will they learn?
Subject: Kids and social media

The Trib's Megan Guza Tweets out that those looking for the best coverage of the state-owned university strike should turn to...not Deb Erdley and The Trib, but the school-run newspapers.
It's funny how tone deaf people are when it comes to their use of social media.

Ah, Megan! One of the NEW generation of clueless Trib-Kiddies pretending she's a real journalist.

Jen's Trib seems to be doing better than Frank's Trib. Look around the newsroom. People are actually excited about coming to work again.

You mean the dozens of people that will lose their jobs on Nov 30 have a smile on their face?
Or maybe you're talking about those who will add hours to their daily commute to work in Greensburg.
You not only drank the Kool-Aid, you chugged it.

How many people will be left in the newsroom at the end? Jen and her hapless team may have taken over, but journalists on the level of Prine and Conte are gone. Who fills those shoes? Guza, Signorini, Togneri, Czebiniak. Bowling, Aupperlee, Bowder? We're talking D-listers.

Those smiles won't be there long. Jen and her fellow executive bumblers have nothing left to fight with. Oops! My mistake. They have UpGruv!

So many posters on here are clueless. A company losing an estimated 70 million dollars a year could not sustain anything at the alleged level of losses. A company right-sizing and getting back to its core products is what happens every day in the business world. By all accounts, the last round of changes represent the completion of the strategic plan. It is reported nearly all annual losses have been erased. Poke fun at Bertetto and her team all you'd like, but if they hadn't made these changes the Trib would be gone completely. Along with all the jobs that still remain.

I'd see the cluelessness as on your end. Scaife flushed away tens of millions a year on a subpar publication and relied on deep discounts and hypermarketing to create an impression of growth and success, a pricey parlor trick.

Now, reality has set in and Team Jennifer is trying to recover from all this by divesting, laying off, buying out and downsizing, a strategy of reduction, of doing less with less, offering lousy coverage and not as much of it. In the universe of Trib Total Bertetto, there are fewer lousy journalists, but also fewer good ones. Pittsburgh will be online. Greensburg and VND will be in print, though neither are worth the paper they are still printed on.

The quality of the new, diminished Trib is no better than it was when Dick was at the controls and flinging around his millions for his own amusement. That won't change. Why? Because the Jen gang doesn't know how to improve it and most importantly, doesn't care.

You are right. Clearly hiring a few 'great journalists' was the solution. Get a clue. What do you think is going to happen to the PG when their faltering cable company can no longer subsidize their 30 million dollar a year loss? It's coming. Maybe you should call them with you gem of a tip now since it is to late for the Trib.

He's gone but it's still Dick's Trib, albeit diminished considerably. All Jen is doing is perpetuating the Trib Lite fantasy a little while longer and trying to convince the gullible at the Clark building to play along.

I don't see where she is trying to make people play along. It seems the message is, 'We are going back to local journalism and not playing 'dress up' anymore in Pittsburgh'.

That should be "We are going back to MEDIOCRE local journalism because we don't want to pay for people with the talent to do better, and we're in denial this is still a one-paper town."

The few talented newsroom staff at the Trib were more a fluke than any serious attempt to raise the bar. Even before the cuts, the place was full of people possessing questionable journalism abilities or talent. Unfortunately since the cuts, some remain as freelancers.

So wait, the fact that she's encouraging the next generation of journalists who are the boots on the ground here is a bad thing? Wow, didn't realize that the Kool Aid had gotten that bitter...
The Trib has done what, one story? Seriously, just get off your high horse.

Nothing wrong with young journalists being encouraged. They need that. There's plenty wrong with a professional implying student reporters would automatically outdo veteran reporters with decades of real-world experience. That level of skill is earned over time, through hard work. Smart student journos realize this and work at it, and they become the next generation of skilled veterans.

Yes, someone's on a high horse here, but it's not Megan's critics.

One other thing: the constant accusations of "bitterness" say more about the accusers than the accused.

Maybe the little kiddie took note of the fact that Deb couldn't be on the ground reporting live from all 14 schools. Or are student newspapers competition now?

I don't think anyone in their right mind expected Deb Erdley to cover all 14 schools. But I also don't expect anyone in their right mind to point readers away from their newspaper or media outlet to others.
When you're wrestling for every single reader or click, you don't tell people there are others doing a better job. And that's exactly what she said. Even if she had said something like, "We've got the best coverage here, but if you want even more, go to these student newspapers." That would still have not been great, but it would have been better than what she did.
