Subject: OMG! Jerry Micco on "KD/PG Sunday Edition"

Usually on Sunday mornings, it's Beltway Dave sitting with Stacy Smith, or if not Dave, "Bikeway John" (Allison). Of course John at least looks as if he's comfortable there. The Shribber clearly would rather be somewhere else but in a TV studio talking to more of the locals he looks down on.

But today, it was Micco, the PG's "Senior Assistant Managing Editor/Sunday," whatever that means. He sat there disinterested in the topic of domestic violence in the wake of the Canonsburg murders, talking to women who work to prevent such tragedies. Jerry came off more like the former AME/Sports he used to be. This was beyond square peg-round hole. It was like Dan Simpson interviewing microbrewery owners or Bauknnecht chatting with Janet Yellin. Of course, Micco, a Beltway fave from way back, didn't exactly command a lot of respect when he ran sports. He doesn't deserve any respect now, either.

It's reasonable to wonder why this program exists at all. It's not good public affairs programming and certainly doesn't put the remnants of the PG in a particularly flattering light, not with Shrib and not with Micco. I've heard it said it ought to be retitled "Sunday Funnies" instead of"Sunday Edition." But it's not funny at all. It's one more sad showcase of the PG's continuing deterioration under Block ownership, as the Trib fades from relevancy.

Why waste the airtime? Couldn't Channel 2 add a few bucks to the bottom line by running another infomercial?

KDKA and the P-G have a relationship going back decades. This sorry excuse for public interest programming grew from that relationship, and Stacy Smith or Ken Rice handle the station's end capable enough. It's too bad the P-G lacks any personable editors who can give a good accounting when seen on camera. It seems the stuffy, pompous Shribman, annoyingly bookish Allison and laughably crass Micco (a Shrib favorite) are the best they can offer. It's worse the P-G's own online videos are mostly fluff. The various webcast sports "shows," "Beer Me" and "Setting the SEEN" are so terrible they look like SNL sketches. When their top editors can't even cut it on broadcast TV, yeah, run another infomercial. "Sunday Edition" sure isn't making anyone rush to subscribe to the P-G.

Today the insufferable Jon Delano was sitting in along with John Allison interviewing some guy who wrote a book about Jimmy Stewart. I bailed after a couple minutes.

I bet JR Block thinks this embarrassing puppet show-slash-interview program is a great come-on to promote the PG via Channel 2. KDKA would call it "public affairs programming." Anyone who'd waste the corporation's money on a joke like the Libercus publishing program the way JR did is a good candidate for some oceanfront property in Wexford.

Maybe the PG can commission a market study and see how many new readers are attracted by the great dialogues seen on "Sunday Edition." The rest of us know the answer, but one can't expect very much intuition from JR and Allan.

That show exists because of John Craig. He loved the idea of the P-G being on TV, even in a fringe time slot like Sunday morning. There was a time when the paper would withhold stories from the early edition so TV stations couldn't grab them for the 11 o'clock news. Under Craig, the P-G started the partnership with KDKA TV and couldn't wait to have their scoops on the air.

Craig's concept must be an extension of that stupid Channel 13 PG show from the old newsroom, the one that ran in the late 1980's. I bet Beltway Dave would just as soon not bother with this but the idea of a KD alliance is so burned into the institutional culture that he's stuck with it.

If I were new to Pittsburgh, considering a PG subscription, seeing "Sunday Edition" once would convince me to steer clear. Nearly as bad: Gretchen McKay's silly performances on TV2's afternoon news. God, is she full of herself. And guess what? No one is impressed.
