If you think about it, even killing off John Conner makes SOME sense in terms of the message of the movies... Basically, what the writer/director said with this movie is, even if you kill off John Conner, THE savior of humanity... A new savior will take his place. A new "John Conner" so to speak will rise and fight for humanity. It's like saying humanity itself is just as indestructible as the machines because, while machines might have relatively indestructible parts, the spirit of humanity, the drive to live on as a species, is stronger than anything the machines could ever muster.

No, I'm not HAPPY that John Conner is dead... BUT... I understand why they went that way, and I personally wouldn't be against seeing how a new series with a new savior pans out (since, u know, John didn't manage to stop the machines for good in the first 5 movies... :-p )
But the point is moot really because Dark Fate did so poorly... So unless the studio is out to lose MORE money, we might just have to settle with what we got thus far, create our own perfect endings in our imagination, and make peace with that. :-p
