I just looked up the story and that is so cool. The History.com article is so cringe though.

I don't agree with this researcher! ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh!!! The soldiers could indeed have had loving families who knew about their close bond. The Educated Romans loved History and would have been aware of things like the Sacred Band of Thebes or countless other examples of same sex loving relationships. While it certainly wasn't the norm for men to be in committed relationships (bisexuality was more common, and being the "top" was ideal from my understanding) it definitely happened.

If only we had a time machine and could know!
