Subject: LifeDrive a good replacement for a Newton 2100?

I'm still looking for a replacement for my Newton 2100. I do a lot of prototyping work on it, and the size of the screen is what I'm really attached to. FYI, the Newton 2100's screen is 4.9 in. by 3.3 in., 480x320 @ 100 dpi. I recently picked up a Tungsten, but had to return it. It's too small for my gigantic thumbs. As far as I know, it has the largest screen among the PalmOS systems, but the whole Tungsten fits in the screen on my Newton, despite having the same resolution. Do you know if the LifeDrive will be physically larger (horiz & vert) than the Tungsten, or is it just deeper?

Although I am only guessing, I would imagine that the LifeDrive will have the same screensize as the Tungstens. Rumours are also suggesting that it will have the same resolution as the T3/T5 also- 480*320.

If screen size is the most important factor, then I would suggest that PalmOS is not the way to go- the HP iPAQ 4700 has a 4" VGA screen, which is truly excellent. If you are able to run your applications in "true" VGA, then you will get effectively four times the information display as a T3/T5 screen. If you have "gigantic thumbs", then you will probably appreciate the size of the 4700, although, the "touchpad" instead of a D-pad may prove difficult.

Hi Neil,

Thanks for pointing that out. That's a nice screen there. I'll see if I can find a local shop that sells one, and test it out.

Any other suggestions? I'd prefer a PalmOS PDA, as I can write software for those on my Mac. I just haven't seen one with a large enough screen for my tastes.

Thank you,
-Chilton

Hi,

I spoke too soon. I was looking at the total dimensions of the device, not the screen size. Again, the entire iPaq would almost fit in my Newton's display. And the fact that they crammed 480x640 into the same space that I'm using 480x320 now... that's almost comical.

I'm not using a tablet because they don't have the same 'feel' as a PDA's screen, for drawing on. I REALLY wish someone would make something with a larger touch sensitive screen. Are there any PalmOS devices on the horizon with physically larger screens?

Thanks,
-Chilton

By the other hand Chilton, I am having bad eperiences with my T3 and my Powerbook G4.
I couldn't find a driver for my HP 990cxi that bought to print directly from my T3.
I used to print directly when I was using the XP platform.
Now I haven't been able to find anything similar for mac.
By the other hand, I can't attach any files to my Versamails on my T3 when I sync with my G4.
Is there anything you know to help me ??

Thanks a lot.

PDAs are getting smaller rather than bigger- the 4700 is really an exception to the rule. VGA screen are appearing on most hlgh-end PPCs, and I personally feel they are worth every penny. Sadly I can't think of any current PDA which would suit your needs completely, nor would I imagne there to be anything ''in the works" :(

Hi Chilton,
I am also a former Newton 2100 user (still own 2 units) and the closest Palm PDA to it is undoubtedly the Tapwave Zodiac. As a matter of fact if you check on the Tapwave forums, you'll find many Newton users/owners. There's just that something that makes you bond with it. I've tried a Clie and T3 but they were just functional alternatives.
Hope that'll help...
