The worst of times gave birth to the rhymes
Poverty inspired now worldwide admired
Some old soul records and two turntables
Tapped into streetlights to feed power cables
Breakin and graffiti added to the expression
The answer to 1980's economic recession
Saggin jeans, sneaks worn without laces
A style started at Rykers, filled with black faces
First cats rockin caps down over their eyes
Were dealers hiding from cops pullin drivebys
Word of mouth led to commercialization
Blowin up into white suburban fascination
Like a vulture swarmin the culture so vile
But only a few committed to the lifestyle
I was born into it; don’t care if you believe it
If you get bored with it ya always can leave it
Cuz inner city life will always bare the brunt
Those buyin the clothes are just tryin to front
Malcolm said "weaken black coffee by adding cream"
"Add too much, lose da flava" to him it did seem
"Used to wake you up now it puts you to sleep"
But some of you ill white cats he neva did peep
I happen to like Irish cream in my java
Some days it's flavored with Hawaiian Hazelnut lava
And when writers block has my flow in a rut
I crack Em, and sip some french vanilla NUT
The best of times are when we ALL can rhyme
For artistic pleasure and not be defined
By clothes we wear, texture of hair, or hew of skin
But by content of character and what lies deep within
Those born blind have the most decent of mind
Cuz vision only produces the prejudice kind
Hiphop has NO color, there's illness in all races
I've learned to judge talent, not color of faces
And the Newbies. . Well…. Lets cut em some slack
Don’t know about you but my first drops were WACK!
So when you switch from jeans to Brooks Bros. Suits
Stay true to the Game and pay respect to its roots.
