Sunderland, Co. Durham, Old North Pier had a lighthouse, erected in 1802. When the pier was lengthened in 1841 the lighthouse was moved 450 feet. A wooden cradle was erected round the 75 ft. tower and it was moved on rails using windlasses. The preparations were begun on 3rd June and on 4th September the building started its journey. On 4th October it reached its destination. There had been no accidents on the way, and no damage was done to the lighthouse. During the journey the gas-lit light was exhibited as usual.
In 1902, after the new Roker and South Piers were built, it was dismantled and replaced by a shorter tower.
