Subject: mercury lens floation

Recently visited souter lighthouse. Info there states lens weight is 4.5 tons and the mercury used for floation is 1.5tons used. I am sure some old greek said that a floating body displaces its own weight in fluid. so how is this floation achieved. National Trust contact there did not know. I would be interested to know if their info regarding weights is incorrect, or is their an engineering solution such as seals maintaining a mercury pressure above atmospheric. Any info or pointers to it would be greatfully received.
