Have read the link in Fred's posting. Unfortunately no nearer an answer. The physics described, and the sketch shown, lead to the conclusion that these floation systems are at atmospheric pressure and thus require a weight of mercury equal to or greater than that of the lens. However the conclusion towards the end states that 80 ltrs of said fluid (1088 kg. at the specific gravity of 13.6 assumed in the article) is capable of supporting a lens weighing 4350 kg. Have emailed the author for any further details or clarification, and am currently awaiting a response.
