A pipe, topped off with a screw cap, was fitted to the apparatus to facilitate filling the trough with mercury.
The fact that is was known for mercury to spill over the top of the trough during severe shaking of the tower - especially at Bishop Rock - is testament to the unenclosed design of the trough. The escaped mercury was swept up by the keepers with a dustpan and brush and poured back into the trough. That, of course, was not necessarily in the days prior to the Health and Safety At Work Act...
