Bob's curious views on the causes of buoyancy have begun to prey on my mind; so about four o'clock this morning I got out of bed and found a deep plastic bowl in the kitchen. I put this in the sink and carefully filled it to the brim with water. Then I found an ordinary drinking glass, put a couple of pennies in the bottom to give it some stability, and carefully lowered it into the bowl.

Obviously it displaced some water, which ran out over the rim of the bowl, so it wasn't there any more. The glass floated all right, though, and there was no sign of the displaced water trying to get out of the sink and back into the bowl. Its weight was now holding down the water supply company's drainage pipes under the street, and not contributing to the buoyancy of the glass.

I then very gently eased the glass down to the bottom of the bowl, and I am here to report to you that the thickness of the water under the bottom of the glass was about 5mm. The glass was quite happy to float with so little water under it.

Dear Bob, please let me get some sleep!
