Nothing to do with how the lens floats,but the reasons for:-

"that lateral movement of the lens is constrained by a series of rollers with vertical axis’s"

The lens needs to stay centralised for a few reasons
1)So the lamp stays at the focal point of the lens.
2)So the drive gear stays engaged.
3)Stop the lens rubbing against the trough.
