Going back to Bobs original question of 4.5 tons of lens and 1.5 tons of mercury.

Very simplistic, but something I could place on my webpage!

Taking Archimedes that if it floats it diplaces it's own weight.

If we take a container holding 6 tons of mercury and float the lens in it,it will displace 4.5 tons of mercury-leaving 1.5 tons supporting the lens.

The 1.5 tons or X litres being the amount required to give enough flotation to allow the lens to revolve?

Michael gave the amount for a particular shape and depth, but I am after an explanation without using formula.
