I was thinking how remiss I had been when stationed at Maughold Head and rewinding every 40 minutes and not realising that I owed it to Archimedes principle that the lens continued to revolve.

Just to say thankyou to Bob for the question and Michael for all his efforts towards the answer,even though I casually discarded them in my simplified answer.
