Subject: The Business of Pragmatism

Thank God those elections are over.
I for one, save the lingering few undetermined results, think the conclusion was pretty much what everyone had predicted.
Now that the hype of the election cycle is over we can all get back to the business of bickering about two lines on the roads instead of one. You know, the real important stuff.
As we look back on the campaigns, good and bad, it is important that those elected or re elected take note of the messages from the voters and the needs of the majority.
When my friend Earl, the current third Selectman in Town was running his campaign, he did not have the advantage of experience about how the Town really works.
His promises to the voters including taking a time out on bonding, not moving the Town Garage, or should I say "the garage would be moved over his dead body", enough spending on open space acquistion, and the needs for dramatic tax reductions have all but evaporated in the real day to day of running our community.
He is an advocate for the WPCA expansion, the Age Restricted Housing in the Industrial Park, he has advocated for moving the Town garage and said recently it must get done.
This IS NOT a critisism of Earl but rather a cordial thank you for understanding the needs, acknowledging them and being willing to act on them.
In deed Earl has been a constant supporter of the Town's actions in our case against CRRA. He has become a advocate for Education and has personally involved himself in fundraisers for a number of Town charities.
To be sure, Earl has demonstrated a vast degree of pragmatism.
Going forward we are now less than 8 months from the next election cycle in Town.
Is Earl going to run? Don't know, but he will surely have a better handle on things than he did 2 years ago.
The WWTP will get done, the Town Garage will be moved and likely the sky will not fall.
I can only hope his pragmatic view of the world doesn't get lost in the dogma of politics.

Earl has gone mad! What is Earl thinking - 5 million for the sewer, 3 million for town garage, hey while your at it lets do the senior center to for another 3 million or so. And don't forget, Earl, your campaign promise to freeze taxes for the elderly. Did you know New Hartford grows lots of potatoes? Did you know that we have 6,600 residents and not all of them pay taxes? Hey,I got an idea, let's tax the potatoes, there is lots of them and they taste good, too!

I've always felt it was pragmatic to listen to what people had to say for themselves... not what a "former opponent" ( oh yeah - the one who beat you!) might feel compelled to present.... interesting that after all the recent negative commentary about Baxter and Company Chris feels the need to say "But we all agree....". I think I'll wait to hear what Earl has to say for himself - I've never found him to be at a loss for words. The "Baxter Boys" are known for twisting the facts to serve their purpose.

and I really doubt Earl asked Chris to be his mouthpiece.

Here's an unrelated yet interesting question: anyone know how its possible that Rich Lederman can squeeze two spec houses on the lot on 219 - where I believe we have 2 acre zoning - are they sharing a septic system? If a developer has blatantly disregarded the deed restrictions he publicly agreed to at a town meeting, how is it possible for that person to get the necessary permits to continue building in this town?
