Subject: Progress??

I was driving to Torrington today, and noticed the devestation, behind WalMart. Where there used to be a nice farm, is now almost totally clear cut. I could not help but shake my head in disgust. Why in heck is there a need for a WalMart and a Target within 50ft. of eachother. We will never get that beautiful view back, and I just think that sucks. My hope is that we in New Hartford, stop and take a deep breath, look at our neighbors, and plan for what is eventually going to happen, Progress??

On the way to Torrington I also saw the devastation of the land behind Wal-Mart. I felt like mourning the lost of open space that is being depleted and desperately needed by wildlife and I will never understand how it ever got by the Inland Wetlands Commission in that city. One only needs to look at the standing water in the fields. New Hartford better wake up because more greedy developers will be coming our way. It's very sad indeed the legacy that will be left to our future generations...oversized concrete boxes. What were they thinking????

the only way for new hartford to wake up is for people to keep a sharp eye on 202. mr. harrison seems to be the prime target. his land is directly abutting that mangled devestation that once was a farm. i understand how it got by inland wetlands commission! today they are lax in their decisions. the rules have been relaxed. if this was 25years ago, they would have said a resounding no. developers can do what ever they dam well please in this state, even to the point of confiscating someone elses land for the good of the community. we all know that it is nothing more than greed to profit. as far as what were they thinking! Money,Money and more Money. Progress alright!

Last year I attended the debate between the selectmen at Ann Antolini School and heard Baxter, and the current BOS Earl and Bill say they would not support eminent domain in taking anyone's land. The topic was at issue and brought to the forefront due to the problem in New London. I hope people remember the promises because we will have another election to worry about next year. With all the activity on this forum I hope people step up to become involved in serving on boards and commissions. We have a democratic process that works quite well you only have to make your name known to either party and/or the party leaders. It really doesn't matter which party because it's hard to tell the difference on the local level.

We can no longer trust Earl According to a post by Chris Jones Earl is in the back pocket of Bill Baxter. Don't you just hate it; they make campaign promises to get elected then cut and run. Quote from Earl "The only way they will move the town garage is over my dead body" They both suffer from cranial flatulence. And I agree with you 100 percent what a mess they have made in Torrington. New Hartford is next if Bill and Earl get their way.

you can go to all the debates and speeches you want! okay? Baxter has mentioned eminent domain in the past. it was even quoted in the newspaper, i believe it was the waterbury republican sometime early last year.this guy does the two step. he can make all the speeches he wants!
they will tell you anything just to get elected! i know for a fact, that when any of these politicians say they are against eminent domain, or eminent domain is the last resort for development, they are lying right through their teeth! it is a done deal. it has happened over and over again. i watched mr,. earl m. carefully but again it sounds like baxter has brought him over to the other side. wake up! the democratic process does not work when it comes to development. it is people! who is in whose back pocket and how much money is involved. that is a fact of life especially in this state.

Sounds to me you are saying Earl is not a free thinking man and is being taken in by the Baxter entourage. If that is the case why aren't the people who supported him for selectman up in arms? I am not as cynical as you are and as I said before, you and everyone else only need to step up to be part of the system...let the people of NH decide.
If you do not then you only perpetuate the problem by complaining. There is room for everyone you only need to step forward. What are you afraid of...people on this forum talking about you and mentioning your name for everyone to see?????

[> Re: Progress?? -- Eminently Dominant, Fri. Nov 10, 2006 2:43 pm [1]

I had forgotten about this. But now that you all have sparked my memory let's reopen the debate on changing the zoning on 202. I believe with commercial development encroaching rapidly we as a town need to rethink zoning regulations.
The south end is rapidly becoming the more populous area of town. New home construction in bakerville and nepaug has outpaced construction in the the center and pine meadow 2-1 in recent years. Torrington is much larger city than Winsted making Rte. 202 a more critical traffic corridor. Isn't it inevitable that 202 and Bakerville will become the defacto center of town.
We need to commercialize this area and quickly. We can take advantage of the traffic that now merely zooms through town on it's way to Torrington and Canton. Why should they get all the Walmart's and Target's. There is always space for a Starbuck's, a Dunkin Donuts. Where is the nearest Chili's
There are a number of areas that could easily be developed with little site work. Harrison's farm (I believe that is the one next to the Torrington Line) is nice but that is only the tip of the proverbial iceberg. We need to do what we can to get this done and done fast. I will be there on the 16th to formally petition P&Z to change the regs. Proggress people progress.

I will do just that. I do live nearby and would love the services. If you promise to give me your support I will put a box in my backyard. Unfortunately I only have a couple acres but if you change my zoning, I'll put in a Lowes faster than you can say Maytag. So you there Nov. 16th.

What's this I heard you want to put in an adult store? You might want to pass that by Mrs. J first.

Canton C.A.R.E. has learned that Lowe's is proposing a 119,000 sq. ft. store and
27,000 sq.ft. garden center on Route 44 just as you enter town. The parcel
of land is between the car wash in Simsbury and 5 Albany Tpke. (the light
industrial building called Ledgemere Park).

For comparison's sake, the biggest building in town is approximately 90,000
sq. ft., the Kohls building, which stacks that space on two stories.

Thus far Lowe's has filed only a wetlands construction permit application.
The Wetlands Agency hasn't yet scheduled a hearing on that, but will
possibly do so at its Dec. 14 meeting. At that Dec. meeting, Wetlands is
expected to act on Lowe's request to revise the site's wetlands map.

The new Design Review Team will review the proposal on Nov. 21, 5:30 p.m. at
the Community Center.

A brief description of the site: it's undulating -- hills and valleys -- and
Lowe's wants to significantly rework the site to flatten an area large
enough for the store and 470 parking spaces.

This application points out that the Canton Golf Course was NOT the last
available parcel in town with the potential to be developed with big box
retail. By leveling topography, combining lots, and redeveloping existing
buildings, there is the potential for a tremendous amount of square footage
to be built along 44.

It is our choice and challenge to develop in a way that will respect our
landscape, promote our economic health, and preserve our character and
identity.

C.A.R.E. will be having a special meeting to discuss this proposal at the
end of November or early December.
