Subject: Superintedent's office flyer on Residency Proposal misleading

The supertendent's office put out a flyer last week apparently intended to further confuse the issues surrounding the proposed change to a residency based policy.

The flyer asks
Question:"Will the proposed policy lengthen bus route time for Children".
Answer: No. The board of ed is committed to ensurin that no child's travel time exceed board policy of one hour.

This answer is either poorly thought out or intended to deceive.

The proposed policy will mean that childred currently picked up at one central location (Giant Steps) will be picked up at locations spread across town. If these kids live on an existing route, it will add time for thier stop along that route. If these kids live outside of the current routes, (as some do), it will mean that buses have to travel further as well as handle additional stops.

There is no way that the same number of buses can make additional stops and travel to places outside the current bus routes without it adding time to the bus routes. This means that all children in NH may be negatively affected by this new policy.

Accourding to bus schedules supplied by the superintendents office, there are currently many bus routes over 50 minutes and one bus route is 87 minutes. Clearly the committment to keeping bus routes under 60 minutes is can not be kept without adding additional buses.

It should be noted that the board of ed's policy on how long bus routes were supposed to be was recently changed from 50 to 60 minutes to allow for the increased busing time that the new policy will require. Even at 60 minutes the additional stops are likely to push many bus routes over the 60 minute mark.
