I live in Middletown. Sunday at 1P I was driving down a usual route for me, one side of the road is a large field where deer graze and on the other is a deep wooded area, with an actual path worn by the deer as they cross the road. I always go slow because no matter what time of day, the deer might be crossing. I spotted this large animal, larger than a german shephard(we've owned them so I am familiar with them), but grey, walking across the same area of road from the field to the woods and up the deer path. He had a large low tail like a shephard, but legs up straight not the way a shephard almost crouches when they walk. He was longer and taller than a shephard and a color I have never seen on a domestic animal. I stopped my car in the area of the path but no longer could see the animal. And frankly it was so big that I didn't want to get out of my car. I don't see how it could be anything else but a wolf. Am I crazy? I have seen coyotes but they are small animals around here. Heidi

I believe there is a dead grey wolf on the exit ramp to Mohegan Sun casino. I drove by it, and it was much larger and furrier than a coyote, and much more muscular and wider muzzle.

Driving by an abandoned farm and this animal came galloping across the road. This animal had a wide muzzle, long tail and was larger than a german shepard and had a greyish coat. It looked very healthy.

03/27/11-This morning there were 2 howling in the backyard, near Constitution Blvd. S. I know a family of them has been living in the woods for a couple of years.
This area is heavily wooded, with a total of about 40 acres. It seems that they are getting braver, and braver. Coming closer to the houses, cats, and garbage.

I also live in middletown, and I think tonight I saw a wolf on an open field opposite route 154. It definitely was no german shepard.

I used to breed shepherds and I know what they look like too. I have huge coyotes where I live now. They aren't wolves. They trot silently along the road at night. They catch the rodents that live in the rock walls around here. If you open your door at the right time you can see them not ten feet from you. I haven't heard of anyone being hurt by them though they'll stare you down. Wolves are actually timid and will hide from humans. If you want to see a good photo go to puppyfind.com under shepherd and there is a breeder of them. You can see right away from the face that its a wolf.

wow heidi thats so wierd. Yeah last night i found about a foot long bass in my backyard that had been eaten out and all that was left was head, back bone and tail. It had very large teeth marks in it. Then later on that night i found a huge footprint coming out of my pond. It was too large to be a fox or a coyote so i did research and it found out that it was a wolf. And there was also small baby prints next to it. About three years before today, i swore that i saw two grey wolves running together in the woods but was unsure if they were wolves i have never seen them in Ct before! Response? ... 7/4/07

The chances are very, very small that a wolf would be in ct.
there could be though, but there are probably only about 30
of them in ct. Coyotes can get pretty big. I saw what looked
like a wolf, but it was just a coyote. You could have seen one, but
you probably won't see another. If I were you, I would cherish
seeing it, as that is very lucky.

I drove to a friends house in Easton, CT tonight and when I parked my car in their driveway to drop something off, they had not gotten home yet, I heard a horrible loud noise, one that I had never heard before and it was very close in by their backyard....I ran out of the car to drop off what I needed to and the noise grew closer to the door I ran in to. When I came out the noise was still there. It was like a howl but a very strange one. I went onto youtube to see if I could find the sound of wolf, coyote, bobcat and the sound was that of the wolf! it was very closeby to me.
At first I thought it was almost an owl sound but it became so loud and grew louder, there must be wolves living in their back yard!

The same wolf walked thru my yard in Rockfall, near RT 66!. It was a mangy grey wolf with patches of reddish fur!! It looked similar to a shephard...but that was no shephard or coyote!! It was headed into the woods. Walked right by me and my cat sitting on the deck frozen in place!!!

Yes, I live in Middlefield and have seen a black very large wolf alone in our yard where the deers cross. I was amazed how tall and long it was.

Sorry to disturb you but saw your post on voy.com forum on wolves and got your email from that site. In my hurry I did not see that I could not post to this site without joining.

Saw a wolf many times in the marshes near Lighthouse Pt. Park, new haven CT, about 10 to 15 years ago. Verified by Park Rangers, who had seen it numerous times and seen footprints and scat. Of course the possibility is that it was a Wolf=Dog hybrid that had escaped or been abandoned, but it would still more more of a Wolf than a dog.

With Wolves, Moose, Mountain Lion, Black Bear, Coyotes being sighted in Ct, I would say that wildlife has rebounded in CT, and that is a mixed blessing, lol!

Ps: Might have seen a wolf in North Haven CT, but could not be sure, but will keep an eye out.

I was just searching the web trying to find information about whether there were wolves in CT and found this site.
Tonight driving home (~9:30) I saw what i believe was a wolf crossing the road in front of me. I was going fairly slow because there are always opposum crossing the road there...i hit my brakes and swerved to let him go by, he turned looked at my car and then ran off through the field. I was in Enfield heading backroads towards Somersville where there are a lot of horse farms. I've seen coyotes and this animal was at least 2-3 times the size of any coyote I've seen. I'm positive it was not a dog. My headlights illuminated him fairly well and he looked to have a light gray-dark white bottom and a gray top, a large bushy tail hanging low, his head was straight up, not hanging down like most dogs do, and I would guess he weighed 70-90 lbs.
Just like the other person I thought I was going crazy. I can't seem to find much information about wolves here in CT except for a lot of sites saying there are none.

I also saw the dead wolf on the exit ramp by Mohegan Sun. I thought it was a large coyote at first but couldn't believe they could be that big. Now I'm convinced it was wolf because somebody report seeing one on our street. They called the Mystic Nature Center and without telling them where he lived the Nature Center knew he lived in Ledyard.

On Sunday 9/17 my husband and I were working in our yard (In Waterford CT) when what we believed to be a wolf came trotting through our yard. We often get coyotes but this was MUCH larger. He came from the area by our pond and exited the open area to the woods.

I was glad I read your post because no-one believed me. I was riding in the passenger seat on the on ramp from Cross rd to get on 95 north last sunday(also the 17th) when an animal that I believe to be a wolf started to emerge from the brush right next to me, instead of coming out onto the road it turned around and went back into the woods there. It was about two yards away from me and it is slow going around the bend there so I had time to get a good look. The thing is it was much larger and huskier then a coyote and resembled the wolves I have seen at zoos. I have seen coyotes before and it was much bigger and huskier then that, grey with bushy fur and tail.

I also saw what I believe was a wolf in the woods behind the Waterford dog park. It scared the hell out of me, as I was walking my Chihuahua, but more importantly, my 5 year old Granddaughter was with me as well!!! I felt trapped because I was so far from another human being and felt especially fearful with my little one with me!! I am never walking the woods alone again!! They definitely need to post signs!!!

I live in NL near the Connecticut College Arboretum and I swear I saw a grey wolf last spring as it ran across our property. It made eye contact with me and was very big. Now I know what a coyote looks like and this was no coyote, nor did it look like a dog. No one believed me until just a couple weeks ago my neighbor saw what she swears is a grey wolf in her backyard. She saw it from her slider, with her back porch light on. She is convinced it is also no coyote. I am certain that I read a report that in 2008 there was a confirmed death of a grey wolf in MA... DNA confirmed match, so I can't imagine that there are no such things as wolves in CT. There have been other wild animals who have been found in CT so why not wolves. I think these animals have re-established themselves in the woods.

I live in New London. I also saw this wolf. He trotted across a field I can see from my window last night. He was very large. And totally a wolf. I thought maybe he wanted me to follow him because he stopped and looked at me, but I didn't because it was too cold outside. Nobody believed me until they saw this post on the forum. Thanks fellow wolf-spotters. NLwolfs4ever

Strange, but I live in Waterford as well and had a wolf sighting in my front yard late Halloween night this same year. I've seen plenty of coyotes but not this time. This was spotted in the Great Neck area.

There is a rather large pack living in the woods between Braman Road and Harkness. We see them all the time in our back yard and walking up and down the street. They are about the same size or larger than my 120 pound dog. I know what a coyote looks like and these things are definitely not coyotes.

My girlfriends and I were coming home from dinner and we saw a grey wolf coming out from my backyard and not more than a minute later we saw another one cross the street from the neighbors yard. We have lived here 32 years and have NEVER seen wolves before

Yesterday driving to work on the Milford Connector I thought I it was a dead wolf ... large grey animal, much like the descriptions above? Has anyone gotten any answers as to whether or not there are wolves here in CT?

My husband, son, and myself were heading towards Rte 214 on Whalehead Rd. last night and we saw a wolf cross the road right in front of us. We were just north of the Avonlea Conservancey property. It crossed the road then stopped on the other side in the woods and turned to look at us. We got a really good look, and it was definately a wolf.

I saw a wolf about 1 month ago in the Quaker Hill area. There was no mistaking this awesome creature. I knew the minute we locked eyes that I was looking at something other than a coyote and definately NOT a dog. My neighbor across the street has also seen it. We both thought we were crazy because everyone said there was no way there were wolves in our part of the country, nevermind our town. I did manage to shoot a picture, and of course it was blurry, with no picture of the wolf. (sigh) Maybe someday I will manage to get a good shot of this wolf and be able to post it. On a side note, someone has spotted what they said was a grizzly bear in our area, but I suspect it was a black bear. (entirely possible in my opinion!)

I deliver newspapers early every morning in North Haven and Hamden. This morning, about 4:30, I pulled off Ridge Road in North Haven and down a long driveway toward a house deep in the woods.I immediately saw two animals in the drive and thought they were fox which I see in this area often. As my headlights shown on them, I realized they were not fox or coyotes, but two dogs. They walked off the drive and stopped as I drove up to them slowly. I pulled up next to them, about five feet away. They were not dogs, but definitely wolves or possibly a wolf/dog hybrid.I have been an amateur student of wolves for many years, and have read much on the subject. One was male about 80 to 100 lbs.,the other female, about 10 to 20 lbs. lighter. The female slipped into the woods quickly out of my sight, but the male stayed his ground, observing me for about 15 to 20 seconds before walking away.I got a very good close look at him,and if he was not a wolf, I'll eat my hat.

About 2 weeks ago at 2:30 in the afternoon I was backing out of my driveway and started to pull forward and saw 2 large wolves they were dark brown with black in the middle and big yellow eyes both staring at me about 90 to 100 lbs. 10 feet away I'm glad I was in my car. Haven't seen them since but they are working on the power lines across the street and digging up large holes. Thats where they ran to. I look up timber wolves and that is exactly what I saw. I live in Orange.

Twice now my husband has seen a wolf in our back yard. We called animal control who insists that it's a coyote. It ran in front of my husband. It was chasing a deer. It ran right infront of him, stopped, turned to look at him and then continued after the deer. He said that it was hip high to him when it went by him. He was afraid for his life it was so big, but animal control doesn't want to believe it was a wolf. Yesterday, he saw it again. This time he got pictures. I think the DEP may be wrong. There appear to be wolves in CT

Danielle, I know your post was back in March but any chance you have those pictures? I live in the Ashford/Stafford CT area and I know I saw a wolf on RT 190 as it crossed in front of my truck. I checked the DEP sight and they of course only say large Coyote but this was NOT a coyote. I have studied wolves for some years and have relatives in Maine that rescued injured wolves to later release them once well again and this was NOT a coyote! DEP will not accept or acknowledge something like this, much as they will not acknowledge that we have cougars here in CT either but a picture speaks volumes!.. if you happen to check this blog again and have those pictures I would love to see them.. jsut so I knwo I'm not crazy :0)

i live in hamden CT and my boyfriend and I saw a wolf crossing the street in the reservoir right near my house.I watch a lot of animal planet, I have seen coyotes and I know what dogs look like. It was def a wolf, I would bet my life on it. Thats what happens when humans cut into animal territory they have to move in human territory.

It was on the smaller side - I'm guessing 60:-65 lbs. I have a 70+lb black lab and it was about the same size. Gray w/ white and black markings heading from Emmanuel church road towards rt 148.

This was definitely not a coyote - much taller and heavier.

Three weeks ago a 70 to 80-pound wolf sauntered across Reservoir Road about 30 feet in front of my car. Once it got to the east side, it stopped, turned, and stared at me before going into the woods. It had something small and black in its mouth - a pup perhaps? After I drove by, it re-emerged from the woods, trotted down the road 15 feet, then disappeared back into the woods, heading toward the reservoir. Absolutely no doubt it was a wolf, or a Shepard-wolf mix. I heard someone in town had raised wolf-dogs and some got loose. Either way, it was an amazing sighting!

>I saw a wolf... In Southport, CT around 2am right smack in the middle of the driveway. The flood lights were on and I could see he was larger then a german shepard (approximately) 80 lbs. He had those wild eyes and when he saw me he moved so sleekly back over the hill... when I called environmental protection and left my message. They called me back with a message saying you probably dont know how many pounds he actually was .... well I have a friend who has a Kerry Blue who weighs 55lbs this creature was much larger (I judged dog and believe me it was 80 plus) and proceeded to say that their are no packs but maybe a wolf traveled from Canada like a Timberland Wolf. My guess is they dont want to alarm the public yet until they become a pack. One single wolf is not alarming to them. So my guess is... it probably was a wolf suzanne

I think I definitely saw a wolf cross RTE 7 in Wilton last night around 7PM. He darted out from the woods just past Orem's diner and was taken back by how quick he was--have never seen a dog run that fast from a dead stop. Very large, gray and white, long thin tail that hung low and bushy at the end. The ears were pretty pointy, but could not see it's eyes and don't recall length of snout--it happened so fast.

I've seen a wolf in Colorado (stood 25ft away from one) and know what they look like. This was not a coyote.

I believe I saw a wolf today around 12/12:30 PM roaming alone in Fairfield, CT. I live on Fairfield Beach Road, saw it from my kitchen window roaming across a ridge that is situated opposite the creek that runs parralel to Fairfield Beach Road. There are many deer, rabits, ducks, geese etc. in the area it was roaming..very protected from civilization. I've seen coyotes before and this immediately struck me as a wolf and not a coyote. My girlfriend and I have been watching many national geographic specials on netflix about wolves lately and I'm pretty sure this was a wolf. I couldn't see if this was just a husky that had run away, and couldn't see if there was a collar, but definitely not a coyote.

saw a large coyote, wolf or feral dog @ 6:35am today. We live in New Milford in a rural area. It was loping through our yard and I got a good look at it. It was 40-60 pounds, colored and marked like a german shepard but it did not have the hips and rear action of a GS. It was substantially taller than a coyote. Its tail was not GS like, but fuller like a wolf or coyote. The head was coyote-like. It was following the same trail as deer use thru our property. We own dogs and frequently see dogs crossing our land, and they behave differently than this animal did.

What i think may be going on is far worse than wolves. Coydogs, can be as big a dogs/wolves, crazy as a coyote, bold and fearless of humans. They are a very serious problem

I live in [south] Cheshire and have had one cross my yard twice. I am located between two 'open space areas' contiguous to state park lands. I have seen coyotes take the same route and this was much larger, colored a bit differently (more grayish) and probably 3 times the weight of any coyote. As with your experiences, the DEP won't acknowledge their existence, but they did say the animals will rarely but occasionally interbreed and a male wolf will follow the female coyote if she travels. I had a friend witness one of the instances and he said "That's a wolf" before I had the chance to ask him what he thought it was.

Danbury Ct, Joes Hill road.
4 Am on friday I saw what appeared to be a large light grey wolf that ran about 30 feet in front of my car. I have seen coyotes before but this was much biigger. It had heavy white, light grey fur. It was quite a bit larger then my 80 lb. dog.

#1 My husband saw a small wolf on Flood Road in Marlborough, CT, it trotted alongside his car for about 4oo feet so he had a good long look at him. He was very mangy but much more hair than a coyote and being a German Shepherd lover, he knew it wasn't a GS. He called me and told me what he had just seen so I called Animal Control. The ACOfficer knew exactly what I was talking about, and said the DEP would deny it if we reported it. He told us that there is a white colored Gray Wolf and a black colored Grey Wolf in the woods near my home. #2 About two weeks later while we were eating breakfast, we saw a large white "dog" about 60 feet away from our house, the beagle was barking at it and it just stood there staring at him. We quickly realized it was no dog, but a wolf.

In August, before I ever heard of wolves in CT, my friend in Portland, CT saw one in her yard, (she too was letting her dog out) and it was very close to their house. She said it was not a coyote, she is a Maine native and knows what a coyote looks like.
***************
The animal control officer said they wouldn't hurt us, but I have small kids and I am slightly freaked out. Not to mention that the Animal Control Officer also told us that there have been cougar sightings in the Colchester, CT area. I found out that a wolf is the cougar's only predator. A blessing in disguise?

I would love to hear a theory on why DEP denies there are wolves here.

Hi Karen from Storrs, I live in Ashford CT and I know I saw a wolf on RT190 as I was coming back from Stafford. This was a large canine, dark gray fading to almost white as you go from it's spine down to it's legs. Large tail and approx 100 lbs. I have a white german shepherd and do shepherd rescue so I know what shepherds of all colors look like and this was not a shepherd and it was also not a coyote. I have studied wolves for some time and have relatives in Maine that rescue and nurse injured wolves to be rereleased when in good shape so I have seen wolves up close and that is what I know I saw in Stafford that day. This was probably about Sept 19th or so at around 5pm

My mother, who lives in Windsor, spotted what we believe was a wolf in the field behind her house this past Friday. Luckily, her camera was nearby and she was able to snap a few pictures and a couple of videos. I emailed them to the DEP. Is there any other agency that a sighting could be reported to and have identify what is in the photos?

This morning on my way to work I saw a large dead animal on the side of the road. It was between exits 19 and 20 or 21 going North on 91. It was very large, think fur...couldn't have been a coyote and based on all these other posts I think we have a decent population of wolves in CT again... :)

All my neighbors think we are nuts....but my wife and I DEFINITELY saw two wolves in Rocky Hill CT on Sunday morning at around 8am. There are many coyotes living in Rocky Hill, so we know exactly what they look like. We also know what a German Shepard looks like. These were wolves...an adult and a smaller one. The reported sightings in Marlboro, Portland, Middletown, and Windsor make us feel less crazy. Thanks.

>Hi-Im responding to your message about seeing a wolf in Rocky Hill. Last night my husband and I were driving on Newington Mountain (RTE 175) towards Wethersfield and we saw a healthy looking wolf run from one side of the mountain to the other crossing the street! We couldn't believe it. I called DEP and they told me that "there are no wolves in CT." She even asked me if it was a dog!! I know what a dog looks like and we have coyotes across the street from us in the woods-so we know what those look like as well. This was definitely a wolf!

I would love to have wolves back in Connecticut. But I am skeptical of these reports!

I saw a beautiful wolf cross right in front of me on I-91N between exits 13 and 14. I had to slow to about 50 mph when I saw it come out of the meridien, so I got a pretty good look at it. It was definitely not a dog, and seemed too large to be a coyote. It had thick white, gray, and brown fur. A truly stunning image.

I am from North Haven and have recently been hearing what sounds like at least a 1/2dozen or so animals yelping and howling around the same time each night. Wolves usually do that before a hunt. Last week while driving near Pool Rd. I saw what I thought to be a very large Coyote. Last night in the same area my girlfriend and I saw the same animal in the road again. It saw us driving up and trotted right up the center of a side road that leads into a culdesac .The animal made no attempts to run and when I blew the horn it veered into some thin brush along side the road about 5 feet. It stopped and stared at us.... no fear or need to flee. This was definately a Wolf! I couldn't believe it was so very close to so many houses and populated surroundings! Also, a few month's back my girlfriends brother opened the front door and saw one not 10 feet away on the lawn. This is right off of Cloudland...

We were walking on a path by the power lines in Middletown. At the bottom of a hill there was remains of a large animal. As we were heading back we noticed what appeared to be a wolf. It had black fur,and looked the size of a large dog. When we looked online, the pictures matched what we saw.

I drive along rt. 85 between hebron and colchester in the mornings around 6:25 every morning. On Thursday of last week I saw what looked like a wolf eating a deer on the side of the road right before the entrance to old colchester rd. Did research and believe it to be a wolf. Also again this morning Monday, I saw the same animal at 6:31 about 100 yards south of the first time just poking around. Body stands about 3 feet high, neck is extremly big and full, and tail is not curly it hangs down. Please share if you have seen this in this location.

>Yes, you did see a wolf. My parents own 4 acres on Daisy Hill in Oakdale, which is off of 85. One early morning we heard a bunch of noise in the woods in their backyard. It was a few deer running for their lives, as a couple of gray wolves were chasing them. Scary, yet beautiful to see them so close.

I live in Orange. This past fall we came in the house to wash up from raking leaves. We saw a deer run through the back yard be followed by, what we thought at the time was a big, angry, scary, looking German Shepherd. It was way too big to be a coyote.

My husband and I saw a white variety of grey wolf in Brookfield, CT. Around 2 years ago, we were taking a neighborhood walk on an autumn day around noon. A wolf walked across the road around 6 yards in front of us. It paid no attention to us. It was magnificant! Of course, no one believes us since "there are no wolves in CT." However, while conversing with our neighbor several weeks later, he remarked that he had seen a wolf in his yard - and it was on the same day and approximately the same time we had our sighting.

I live in the woods, outside of Norwich and I am certain I saw a wolf last spring. We have coyotes running through our yard all the time, so I am more than aware of their appearance.

I was awakened at about 2 AM, when my motion detector went off. I looked out the window, expecting to see a coyote or a raccoon, but what I saw was very clearly a gray-colored wolf standing near my back deck. It had long legs, a long body, and was quite tall, definitely more than 30". I can gaurantee this number, because I have English Mastiffs and this thing was similar in height, though not nearly the same width. I woke up my wife and she looked out the window with me. She could not believe how enormous this creature was. Definitely a wolf. I spoke with a local biologist who assured me that no wolves are living in CT. I know what I saw, and have animals here in my home that I can use as a standard of measure. It was a wolf. Scary.

I was hiking on the Shenipsit Trail in Glastonbury today and saw what might have been a gray/timber wolf below me (I was on a high ridge, and it was loping down below across the trail). I'm not an expert on differences between coyotes and wolves, so it may have been a large coyote. It had a very graceful rapid lope; large bushy tail; was tan with darker threads. Much larger than a fox, but since it was below me and distant, it's hard to judge whether it was the size of a large coyote or a wolf.

I was on my way to work this morning in Pomfret CT. Im almost positive I saw a wolf running in front of me. It looked like a large German sheppard with a bushy tail. I thought it was a dog at first. My husband thinks im loosing it but i know what i saw. It was running from a farm and darted into the woods. The way it moved this was no dog.

In September 2009 I was driving on Cedar Lane in Middletown CT I hike with my dog out there all the time. I was heading south toward Brooks Rd and about 100 ft infront of my car a very large Wolf (White and blond in color) crosed the road and went into the woods when I got to where he went into whe woods I stopped and about 100 feet into the wood there he was just looking at me and we staired at each other for about 15 seconds and than he went his way. He was very beautiful and large, over 150 LBS. About 2 days later I was hiking in that area and ran in to a woman hiking with a Great Dane and what I was was a little taller and much stocker that here Gread Dane which she said weight 150 lbs. There are deffinatly wolfs in CT. The DEP is not going to admit that because it's bad for business. People will be afaid to visit the parks and other outdoor places in CT if word gets out that there are wolfs and mountain lions in the wood of CT but those of us that have seen know. I have also seen tracks of a mountain lion too.

Come on, the Dep is NOT going to deny it if they knew wolves are around!! Bad for business...WHAT business?? But, they want proof! Do you KNOW how many pics of "cougars" they get a month? And they are NEVER cougars, though the pic taker SWEARS THAT THEY ARE. They are usually dogs, and PLAINLY so...but...people insist.

For the record, I believe that cougars ARE in CT. Wolves, not so sure...BUT don't expect DEP to be impressed with ANYTHING LESS THAN a body, scat, print or REAL pic.

There are DEFINITELY wolves in CT. I dont care what any "expert' says. I was driving slowly (about 45mph) on 84 west this morning (was snowing out) and was somewhere between bristol and southington, heading towards waterbury. on the right of the road about 30 yards from me, just outside of a patch of woods, was standing a wolf grey in color. slightly bigger than a large german shepherd, absolutely not a coyote, definitely not a coydog (which I have seen in the Adirondacks), but a wolf.

I have to change my above post from 30 yards to 10 yards...I know it was about 30 feet, and was trying to calculate in yards as most people do who give eyewitness accounts of things. 30 feet, not yards

There are wolves in Connecticut. I live in Plainville, CT it's about 7-8minutes from Bristol, CT. Early this morning at about 2:13am i was driving home from bristol. When right in front of me crossing the road was this gray i say WOLF! it was not a huskey or any type of dog animal i have seeing up here before. i've see Fox, bob-cat, coyotes. you name it i've seen it. and this was nothing i have ever seen before it was like out of a documentary. it was snowing out and it was so beautiful. and this scares me just a little because in my back yard they is a marsh land wild reserve. and from what i can see, it goes on for ever. i've heard barking coming from there on multiple occasions.

I also live in Wolcott, back in 2010 on County Rd the section that runs between the golf course 3 Grey wolves crossed in front my car, I stopped to watch them proceed into the reservior property. At one point they were no further than 20 feet from me, there was no mistaken identity, they were wolves.

On Friday night, my son and I saw a baby wolf! It was around 10:20 pm, I had just picked him up from a friends house and we were on the street just two houses from the turn to our street when something ran in front of the car. It was grey and white, with a lot of fur. It ran back towards the area it was coming from, I had turned on my high beams so we got a really good look at it. I called our local animal control and I got the same, 'The CTDEP says there are no wolves in CT' speech. I told the animal control woman, I googled pics of baby coyotes and wolves and it was a wolf! I asked her if anyone else in my area had reported anything else similar and she said, people had called in to say the saw full grown wolves, but because the CTDEP says CT has no wolves that's not offical and they can't report it. It's good to know that I'm not going crazy. It was a baby wolf, so I'm sure there is a mama wolf around. We live in Fairfield County.

I have found very large canine paw prints in the past, both in snow and mud in my yard. My wife never believed me that they were wolf prints. This morning about 6 am she was making coffee in the kitchen and a wolf trotted right through our back yard, about 7 feet from our windows. We have had many types of dogs in the past and she said this was not a dog or a coyote. This was in Brookfield CT

Went for a hike behind my house in New Fairfield opposite Squantz pond. I was around a 1/3 of a mile up when I spotted a couple of Deer. They starting running toward me. They ran 50' to me side and continued down hill. I walked to where they were to see if there were any other deer and I looked over a ridge and saw large blond wolf. This was not a coyote, It was like the scene from Jurassic park, I backtracked quickly and got back to my home. Our cat went missing 2 weeks ago. I think I know what happened. Also, there arent as many deer in our area as where I work in Yorktown NY. I see deer in yards there in daylight.

I was camping in Kensington/Berlin last night on a very large piece of land- both wooded and open, and I swear I heard a wolf howling during the night very close to us. It was like a very clear "Ooooooooo" sound, it did it twice before I heard another one in the distance. They howled back and forth to each other about 3 more times. Then I kept hearing the one in the distance for a few more minutes. I listened to sound files online of Coyotes, and their howls are much more higher pitched and screechy sounding and usually have a bit of a "yip" sound before. But this was like one steady tone, and one time it jumped up to a higher pitched tone. I definitely think it sounded like the "lone wolf howl" that I've heard online.

I was turning right onto mu street at around 10:30 tonight when I saw a wolf. It stood in my headlights for a second, then walked off. It looked back as I drove off. Although it was dark outside, I could see that it had a grayish-white coat, and was quite large! I live in the Trumbull-Easton area.

At about 5:45 tonight as I exited the Stop & Shop parking lot on East Town Road across from the back lot entrance to the CT Post Mall I saw a large animal which I believe was a wolf cross the road in front of my vehicle. As others have noted, it looked like a german shepard dog but larger, at least 80 pounds, and was a gray color. It had thick fur with a marked bushiness around the face and had yellow eyes. It was coming from a wooded area which abuts the mall parking lot and walked quickly down the road toward the CT Post Road. I was taking a turn in the other direction and was in traffic so I could not check it out better, it happened so quickly but it was definitely not a dog or a coyote and seemed confident and unafraid trotting right into the road. I left a message with animal control but after reading here I expect them to laugh at my report. Looked online at pictures of gray wolves and that is what I saw.

In Occum,Sprague area a large blonde wolf was spotted by bunch of us, stalking a group of deer that ran by us seconds before, at first through the brush we thought it was mountain lion because of its very light amber color. As it clearedthe brush and became clearly visible, there was no doubt of what it was. There was no way it was a coyote. It was huge and heavy, and so stealthy.. This is truly something I will never forget. There are wolves in Conneticutt

I saw a grey wolf, or what i believe to be a grey wolf earlier today around 8pm in Middlefield, CT on whisper winds road. I was driving by my old house slowly, taking the left to continue towards the main road to head back up to hartford when i looked to the left curb of the street and saw a dog-like animal about.. 4 and a half feet tall with a long tail low to the ground and a very long, thick head trotting along, i slowed down and rolled down my windows and it stopped and stared into the headlights.
I was afraid so i rolled my windows up but I'm pretty sure what I saw was a grey wolf making its way into the field across the street, and into the woods.

let me know if something very lean and muscular, tall and greyish brown ish is a wolf? i know what coyotes look like, as my uncle works on helping bring injured coyotes back to health, and bringing them back into the wild
Thanks so much!

It has been acknowledged by the Fish and Wildlife Service, that a wolf was killed by a farmer in western Massachusetts in 2005. They surmised that it made its way there from Canada. So yes it is possible that wolves are in CT. However, the coyotes that live in the northeast including CT are actually coyote/wolf hybrids, which has been proven through DNA testing. Coyotes, migrating from out west started mating with timber wolves in Canada and in turn populated the northeastern U.S. So, its not impossible to see a "coywolf" as some call them, that has a bit more wolf DNA than the average, and thus is bigger and looks more like a wolf. A large coywolf attacked a sleeping Great Dane not far from me in the Greater Hartford area, and the dog had to be put down. Witnesses said that this coyote was bigger than a German Shepherd. As a caveat, our coyote/wolf hybrids are capable of displaying wolf-like behavior, making them more dangerous potentially than full blooded coyotes. Two northeastern coyotes killed a 19 year old singer while she walked a trail in Canada just a few years ago. This was the first killing of an adult human by coyotes - because they're not really coyotes, they're coywolves. I don't want to scare any one - just food for thought.

Interesting to find this site and learn other people have seen wolves nearby. A grey wolf loped across the street in front of me at the corner of McKinley Avenue and Chapel St. in New Haven last night. It was the size of a large German shepherd; long shaggy grey fur; wide muzzle (not pointy coyote shape); no collar. Its lope was not like a dog's -- stronger and easier, and casual, not a full speed run as if it was chasing something, and not a trot like a dog out for a neighborhood stroll. Unself-conscious, as if that was its accustomed pace. This description of its run probably sounds silly, but I'm hard-pressed to describe it in a way that conveys how different it was from a dog. It was a completely surprising, awesome, unforgettable sight, although I was glad to think that because of the weather people had their pets indoors.

At 4:30 AM on Monday morning (12/24/2012) I was awakened by the glare from my neighbor's front porch light (set off by a motion detector). I assumed that a deer (and there are many in our area) had been the cause of the light going on. But, when I looked across the street I saw an animal larger than a German Shepard dog slowly moving across the property, sniffing at the ground, and in really no hurry to pass by. It had a larger head than any dog that I had ever seen and a very muscular and wide chest. The tail was full and I could not detect the animal's color due to the back lighting of the motion detector porch light. When I locked the latch on the window (it had been inadvertently been left open) the animal stopped abruptly, came up to full height, and stared in my direction for a short time before making its way into the wooded area in back of my neighbor's house. It was definitely not a coyote (we have them in our area too and I have seen quite a few). My thought was "wolf" but I have never heard of one in Connecticut let alone in Niantic where I live.

I live in Killingly Ct, a 5 minute drive to the RI border and a 10 min drive to the mass border. Anyways i work third shift and i was on my way home the other day, i crossed into Ct and about 5 minutes later on a back road to my house a large canine breed sprinted across the road, this animal was grey in color at the rear and gradually got darker to the shoulders, about the size of a sheppard that is well fed and is in great shape, being in the woods like i am i have seen coyotes before and this was a lot bigger than a coyote, i believe there are wolves in Ct,RI, and Mass. I have also witnessed a bobcat with in a 100 yards of my house.

I was traveling southbound on rt.9 out of Middletown Tuesday night (2/5/13) around 7:30 pm when either the healthiest coyote in the world, or a wolf crossed the road in front of me. It was tall, white and gray and fairly husky. It was not a domestic dog. I've had German Shepherds, Akitas and Huskies and think I know when I see one.
Have any been spotted recently in that area?

I was driving home at 15:00 on Rt 6 (the divided portion) just about to bridge over the river and a wolf I swear a wolf came up from river basin and looked at me as I drove by. It was snowing (the big storm was just starting) and the storm must have pushed him out to the open. Willimantic area.

I was driving to work around 11:40 p.m. along Middletown Ave., in North Haven and all of a sudden a large animal was crossing right in front of my car. I barely missed hitting this animal. I suddenly realized what I just saw was a wolf unless it was an extremely large German Shepard. It was similar to a German Shelpard but much larger and light grey. I had no idea wolves were in populated areas like North Haven.

3/17/13 - Southbury, off N. Georges Hill near Kettletown Rd. This evening at about 7:15 (dusk) I spotted a Very Large dog-like animal about 20 feet from my back door. It was to big to be a coyote, its head to broad and musculature to substantial. It had buff-tan underside &legs with dark grey back & large bushy tail carried straight out to low. it was approx 70-80 lbs. NOT a German Shepherd!!! but perhaps wolf or big coywolf.
This animal was very comfortable in my yard checking deer paths and marking territory. Although I initially spotted it in the lawn it toured closer to the woodline during its 15 mins within sight. My husband and I spotted track in the snow in January that were close to 3.5" across with defined toenail pattern. This animal looked to be of similar size.

>Yes, there was one spotted today near Old Greenwich,

Years ago (about 25) my brother was having his Harley engine rejetted by a man living in Rhode Island. His dog was HUGE. One blue eye, one white, the head was very large with a long, extended snout larger than any dog I had seen. The way he stared at you was very unnerving. I asked what kind of dog it was, he said it was half dog, half wolf.

There were birds of every type scattered all over his back yard, the dog/wolf stalked and killed them in the branch. While we worked on my brothers engine in the cellar, through the cellar window I noticed the dog/wolf lift it's ears stand erect, than drop down low on it's haunches and begin to crawl forward.

Ten minutes later I saw the dog/wolf trot by the window with something large in it's mouth. We came up and saw he had a large groundhog. The neck on the groundhog had been broken, not a single puncture mark did we find. On the last day of summer this year (2013), about 3 a.m. twenty yards from my window near a graveyard in Waterford, CT I froze in my bed as a long loud howl let loose, lasted about 15 seconds.

We definitely have coyotes in this area, have seen/heard them many times, but there were no yips as is usually present, only deep growls. Got out the .45 just in case, my apartment has casement windows very low to the ground that were wide open at the time, screens only.

I live in Colchester, CT, in a rural area w/ 3 acres of wooded and marshy land. I was in my backyard w/ the dogs tonight. (Though the yard is fenced-in, I always escort my 10 lb. chihuahua mix on potty breaks at night, due to the potential for visits by wolves, coyotes, and other hazards). I heard howling in the woods in the distance. It was different from any sound I've ever heard living here in southeastern CT. I recognized the voice, by process of elimination, as a wolf. It was low, even-toned, and haunting. I was a bit Freaked out! The howl made my skin crawl & I went back into the house w/ the dogs - fast! My husband heard it too & said "coyote". I said no. It Wasn't the high-pitched "yip" of a coyote w/ the signature of many syllables. It had a lower, deeper tone. I know that sound. I said. "it's a wolf". My hubby said, "We don't have wolves here". I kept insisting. So, my hubby went online & played some "voice" clips. I recognized the sounds as those of a coyote - higher-pitched, expressive, multi-syllabic. I said, " That's not it". (I wasn't looking @ the iPad when he played the sound bites). He played another clip. It was the same; I recognized the coyote call. He played a third sound bite. This was different, and the creature "sang" the same "note" as what I'd heard from my backyard. I said, "yup. That's it! What was that? A wolf?" He said yes. I already knew it was. I know that voice! I'm very audio-oriented. I easily recognize and recall voices, tunes, words and accents - verbal things. I was a language teacher & a singer for many years. I know I heard a wolf or a coy wolf. It was a bit chilling.

This is an edit to the posting above. (Voy is not allowing me to edit the original). I meant to say that I always escort my chihuahua mix on nighttime potty breaks due to the potential for visits by OWLS, coyotes and other hazards. The original post said "wolves, coyotes and other...". I didn't even know (before last night), that we had wolves back in CT. When I wrote the original post, I must have had wolves on the brain! So, I wrote "wolves" instead of "owls". Regardless, after reading these other posts, and hearing the low-pitch howl last night, I will be extra careful and diligent during the late-night potty breaks with our dogs!

It's 11:36 P.M. Wednesday October 16th, whatever it is, wolf, coywolf ? just started howling, moving every thirty yards or so, looking for mates maybe. Low to midrange short duration not like the other night. NO yipping.

I worked in Hartford for quite a few years commuting from Waterford up Rte. 85 to Rte. 11 to Rt.2 - coming home about 4:30 P.M. about this time of year I saw at first what looked like a very large dog running at full speed, alternating between rearing on his haunches while he ran as he intently focused on the wooded section between the highway sections roughly parallel with the campground near the lake.

As I got closer I got a better look. I believe it was a coyote, as it was low to the ground and long. The head looked more like a wolf, the body was very thick. The color was mostly ash grey with a few splashes of black up on its back. The tail was long and very bushy. I would estimate its weight to be 60 to 80 pounds. This was a good twelve years ago, I can still play the incident back in my head clearly.

Last night (11/12/13) wvit 4 news ran a story, Police are warning pet owners about a recent coyote attack. Two coyotes confronted a 13 year old girl and her dog in the back yard. One coyote grabbed the dog. Jamie Ratliff reported from Fairfield officials are receiving more and more calls about coyotes attacking pets.

Officials stated the coyotes are breeding with wolves making the offspring bigger, faster and more aggressive. The attack on the girls dog occurred at 4:30 in the afternoon. Lt. James Perez of the Fairfield Police warned one day they could go after a small child. Jamie Ratliff stated the city hired trappers last year to deal with the coyotes.

Interesting update, since the line has been "there are no wolves in CT". Did the coyotes take a vacation to Maine or somewhere where the wolves are acknowledged to be to mate with the wolves? If it is now acknowledged by the authorities the coyotes are breeding with wolves, isn't it obvious the wolves are here, too? Very disconcerting, to say the least.

I sighted a large german shepard like canine in my backyard but was deffinatly NOT a shepard because it lacked many of those charecteristics. Took it several pictures and ID'd it as a wof by its prints in the snow. It was sighted on Bull Hill which is surrounded by the Salmon River state forest here in Ct. in late February 2014.

I live in Waterbury and have had a wolf in my yard on many occasions
And I have seen it clearly and it definitley was a wolf. I've also had many coyotes and being an outdoorsman I know what I saw. My neighbors warned me about it first and I didn't believe them at first until I saw it and have heard it also. I know what the coyotes sound like and from researching wolves I know what they sound like. If you ask me , d.e.e.p is lying about not having certain wildlife in ct and I know their lying. We have had wolves here for a long time and the same with mountain lions, I've seen them in newtown when I was younger in the state forests.

A relative of mine worked for the State, and when needed operated the snowplows in the winter. There was a montain lion they reported on the side of the road dead, D.E.E.P. picked it up and studied it. I know they don't want to start a panic, but if the wolves are here (is there really andy doubt?) an informed public is an aware and cautious public. >>Does anyone know if there are any reports of wolves

In Oct 2013 @ dusk I was driving on Madison Ave in Trumbull near woods and a WHITE/BEIGE WOLF ran right out in front of my car. It stopped, out of breath from running so I had to stop and we were face to face for about 30 seconds. I fumbled for my phone to take a pic but it ran off. I have a white spitz and I know the visual diff between a dog/coyote/wolf. Lots of coyotes here but this was twice their size and was much taller than the front of my car. It had long thin legs, ratty long haired tail, very long snout, and low narrow eyes. Been googling pics ever since, only match was the white wolf normally only found north of here & Canada. Like others have posted, I know what I saw. Hoping someone else will see it too.

Over the weekend (6/28/14) me and a group of people were camping down at salmon river in East Hampton ct on my family's private property. At about 12:00 - 1:00 am we were all sitting around the fire talking, the music was playing at a pretty loud volume just hanging out. The fire was about 50ft from the waters edge. Out of no where we hear this deep loud howl from across the water (very close by). I hear and see coyotes by my house on a regular bassis due to the field behind my house. The first thing I said after the howl was that is not a coyote. Not two minute later we hear another howl that sounded a little further up river as if they were communicating. The next morning me and a friend crossed the river to see any signs of what had made this noise. Directly across from our camp site (about 150ft away) right on the waters edge we see a huge kanine print in the sand. We walked for about a mile around the area to see any other signs of what this could have been but that was the only clear sign that something big was watching us from across the water. After we got back to camp I did some research with my smart phone on the print and sound that we had heard. I even played sounds of coyotes howling to compare and had ruled out any chance of this being a coyote. I was very excited to have had this experience now I am just looking for a way to prove to others that what we heard that night was in fact a pack of wolves. I am looking into getting a hunting camera to see if I can get a photo of this, if so I will return with another post and hopefully some photo evidence to go with it. Tom

The below quote was taken from Patch.com - it states the attacking animals were coyotes, I can't help but wonder if the animals weren't a wolf/coyote hybrid. Parents please warn your children, let's prevent a horrible tragedy from happening.

Waterford pet owners, take note.

"A coyote ate a resident's cat, chased him right up onto their deck, and grabbed him there," Waterford-East Lyme Animal Control posted on Facebook today.

The incident occurred in the Niantic River Road area, according to Animal Control.

Over 4th of July weekend, someone lost their small dog to a coyote and Waterford-East Lyme Animal Control reminded residents that foxes, fisher cats, bobcats and coyotes are present around town.

"Please keep your cats indoors if you can and watch your small dogs," Waterford-East Lyme Animal Control wrote on Facebook. "Go outside with your dogs, especially at dawn, dusk and night time."

"Be aware that these animals are around and your pets are part of their food chain," Animal Control Officer Robert Yuchniuk wrote.

The article is about a page long, some of the excerpts are below.

State Investigates Hybrid Wolf-Dog Attacks in Southeastern Connecticut

Tuesday, Mar 25, 2014 Updated at 3:25 PM EDT
Connecticut environmental conservation police are investigating reports of hybrid wolf-dogs attacking people and animals in the southeastern part of the state.
Residents reported the possible presence of wolf-dogs around Long Pond in North Stonington and Ledyard. The animals reportedly have bitten a bicyclist, threatened another person and attacked at least two horses, The Day of New London reported. One animal killed by a man last month has been confirmed to be a wolf-dog hybrid.

Great! coyote/wolf hybrids, dog/wolf hybrids, or just wolves mating with whatever is close here in CT. Watch your kids and pets closely.

While I was working in Glastonbury 3-4 years ago, I saw what I believe to be a wolf. I locked eyes with him while stopped at a light; I was on the passenger side, front seat & he had walked out of a wooded area on the side of the road. He was big/tall (able to look in at me & I was in a minivan), grayish-brown, looked very hungry/too thin, had a very long muzzle & piercing eyes that actually seemed menacing. We stared at each other until the light changed, then he trotted off as we drove away. It was a little before dusk. I was shocked to see him there!
