Date Posted: 09/11/05 Sun In reply to: Judy 's message, "Centers for Independent Living affected by Katrina" on 09/11/05 Sun Dear NCIL Members: Your Board of Directors and staff have been following the situation caused by Hurricane Katrina very closely. The Gulf Coast CILs in Louisiana, Mississippi and Alabama have been either totally destroyed or severely damaged. Our Regional Representatives in the affected area are in touch with the directors of these CILs. NCIL’s Executive Committee has carefully discussed and considered our response to this unprecedented disaster. Unfortunately, we do not have the capability to deliver or coordinate immediate emergency relief and are leaving this task to various government authorities, the Red Cross and other emergency relief organizations. However, NCIL is organizing a Katrina Disaster Relief Fund. This fund will be used over the long-haul to assist the effected centers in rebuilding and gearing-up to meet the extraordinary demands that they are going to receive from people with disabilities in the their areas. NCIL is setting-up a separate account which we will administer at no charge in conjunction with the directors of the effected centers and the NCIL Regional Representatives from Regions 4 & 6. Please make a donation (money only as we have no capability to deal with clothes, food, equipment, etc.) of whatever amount you can afford payable to the NCIL: Katrina Disaster Relief Fund and mail to the NCIL office at 1916 Wilson Blvd., Suite 209, Arlington, VA 22201. Please respond with your donation as soon as possible. Additionally, NCIL will begin posting on Monday, 12 September, a comprehensive list of sources where you may direct other money, goods and resources that maybe of assistance to people with disabilities and/or the effected CILs and consumers they serve in the region. We will also post news and information about our advocacy and how you can support it in assuring that Federal and state disaster relief does not leave out people with disabilities. We will update this information daily. In the meantime, you may want to sign-up for Disability Katrina on Yahoo and go to various other web-sites related to people with disabilities including; www.katrinadisability.info , by signing up for the Justice for All list serve at www.aapd-dc.org, www.ncd.gov, and www.nod.org. They all have various information on how you might be able to assist. Please support your fellow NCIL members, the CILs of the Gulf Coast, in their efforts to get back to serving people with disabilities in the Katrina disaster area. Thank you, John John A.
