Subject: No 94-95 compilation was made
In reply to: Or were they still looking to distance themselves 's message, "Did they ever run a best of season 20 during this time?" on 18:09:15 09/05/17 Tue

I'm guessing all the best-ofs being repeated (and the new compilations) were a way to further distance the new year from the disaster that was 94-95; they eventually did replay Travolta and Clooney in March 96, but I thought doing best-of specials for the new season served to quickly legitimize the new cast/writers and play standout sketches from shows where they were still finding their footing.

I got a list of guest writers from someone who went through the credits of the shows to track any writing staff changes; here's who guest wrote for 95-96:

09/30/95: Mariel Hemingway/Blues Traver ROBERT SMIGEL
10/07/95 Chevy Chase/Lisa Loeb ROBERT SMIGEL
10/21/95: David Schwimmer/Natalie Merchant ANDY BRECKMAN, ROBERT SMIGEL
10/28/95: Gabriel Byrne/Alanis Morrissette ANDY BRECKMAN
11/11/95: Quentin Tarantino/Smashing Pumpkins ANDY BRECKMAN, AL FRANKEN, PETER GAULKE
11/18/95: Laura Leighton/Rancid PETER GAULKE
12/09/95: David Alan Grier/ Silverchair AL FRANKEN, ROBERT SMIGEL
12/16/95: Madeline Kahn/Bush KEN SCARBOROUGH
01/13/96: Christopher Walken/Joan Osborne BRIAN MCCONNACHIE
02/10/96 Danny Aielllo/Coolio DAVE R. ALLEN
02/24/96: Elle MacPherson/Sting ROBERT SMIGEL
04/13/96: Steve Forbes/Rage Against the Machine BRIAN MCCONNACHIE
05/11/96: Christine Baranski/The Cure TOM MARTIN
05/18/96 Jim Carrey/Soundgarden TOM MARTIN

Peter Gaulke joined the staff for the rest of the season starting with Anthony Edwards show; he's one of the audience members in the Christine Baranski show. Here he is doing some stand-up sets on Seattle's Almost Live!: https://youtu.be/85XFlzR70wE

Ken Scarborough joined the show in November 2001 and was gone in February 2004.

As much of a rebuilding year this was, I actually prefer it to the following few years. The "family" vibe of the earlier years is stronger this year too (lot of writers of extras).
