Exclusive: NCIS Feud Erupts! Harmon to Walk?

Mark Harmon by Cliff Lipson/CBSWondering why I've been skimping on the NCIS scoopage all these years? Well, I've been holding out for a biggie. And here it is:

Multiple sources confirm that Mark Harmon is embroiled in a tense standoff with NCIS executive producer Don Bellisario, with Harmon apparently threatening to walk. CBS declined comment, but an insider says Harmon has been unhappy for some time over Bellisario's "chaotic management style," and simply became fed up.

"Mark's been working every single day, 16 hours a day," whispers one source. "[Don] tries to micro-manage everything. Script pages get faxed to the set at the last minute, and Mark is tired of dealing with the huge impact that makes on his life. He doesn't have time for his family or anything when he's working hours like that."

It's unclear what impact the feud is having on the show's production schedule — technically speaking, Harmon has yet to miss a day of work — but my spy describes it as a "big standoff."

"Mark is one of the best-behaved actors in this industry," adds my mole. "He's a willing, hard worker and he doesn't complain easily. For him to [threaten a walk-out] means that the situation is very bad."

OK, NCIS fans, what's your take on all this? Can NCIS survive without Harmon? Or should Bellisario do whatever it takes to hold onto his leading man? Speak up! This may be the last NCIS scoop I have in a long time!

[> [> I have a hard time believing Assiello's reports about stuff going on up at NCIS. Not because I'm a DPB fan, but because his last scoopage about Sasha's departure and her reasons for going (i.e. incredibly tense set and dislike between her coworkers) were so wrong that I generally disbelieve much of what he says. Could there be some dispute between MH and DPB? Sure. They're both strong willed individuals who know what they want and aren't afraid of going after it. But a "feud"? I'll reserve judgement until I hear this from other sources who are more reliable. -- KatRose, 06:28:59 04/25/07 Wed [1]

Well, he was right about *who* was leaving, though, even if the reasons were wrong.

I think "friction on the set/with the cast" is the "standard" reason that goes out when nobody really knows the reason.

[Edit]

[> [> [> [> AmyLynn, Assiello didn't say who was leaving back in 2005 before she left, he made the comment that she left because of disputes on set and whatnot about a month after the season ended. I was up on set during the shooting of the finale and didn't see a single thing that was "tense" or out of sorts other than people getting major "senior-itis" because they were nearly at the end of a very long shooting season. And as a result of that goofing around, there were some moments when someone would snap out "let's get back to work". But then things settled back into pro mode and the goofing stopped until the next round of breaks. That's pretty typical of any show and I've been on some that have been VERY tense and NCIS was not one of them. -- KatRose, 08:18:17 04/25/07 Wed [1]

[> [> [> [> [> [> Hey, it was 6AM here, I'm allowed to be a little incomprehensible at that hour. LOL No, what I meant was that after the season ended, Assiello came out with scoopage that indicated the reason Sasha left was because things were terribly tense on set and nobody liked each other and she felt isolated, etc etc etc. I saw none of that, absolutely none. I saw coworkers being goofy and friends chatting and colleagues helping each other. The only tension came from the fact they were three days from the end of a very long season (9 months of 6 days a week of 16 hour days) and everyone just wanted to get it over with before they all collapsed for the summer (i.e. senior-itis). -- KatRose, 08:37:50 04/25/07 Wed [1]

I believe that DPB is very hands on. This can be good and it can be frustrating.

I believe that MH is a professional and a hard worker.

I believe the closer you get to the end of the season, the harder it gets and the more tired you realize you are. Sorta like getting to the end of the school year.

I believe the main, principal cast is under contract for several years. Isn't that standard? Something like 7 years? How do you "just walk" from that? Not show up? Don't you eventually get in trouble? Or risk that they'll get rid of your character? (which I guess wouldn't be the end of the world if you are that frustrated already)

Is there a chance this is an end-of-season rumor to generate baseless talk and general interest? Although .... if it is, now Ausiello's credibility and sources are called into question (I know some don't like this guy anyway, but I found him to be mostly accurate, I think) ...

Very, very interesting ...

[> [> This is what I just read this morning: inside... -- Ryne's Mom, 06:38:33 04/25/07 Wed [1]

From TV Squad:

"Michael Ausiello at TV Guide is reporting a big scoop: NCIS star Mark Harmon is threatening to walk off the hit CBS show.

Citing inside sources, Ausiello says that Harmon has always been fed up with producer Donald Bellisario's (Magnum, P.I., JAG, Quantum Leap) "chaotic management style" and wants off the show. The source also says that Harmon is one of the nicest guys on television and that he's in the right on this one. The dispute is described as "a big standoff."

So I'll ask you readers the same thing that Ausiello asks his readers: can NCIS survive without Mark Harmon, or is he the main reason to watch the show?"

[Edit]

[> [> [> That's pretty much a regurgitation of what Assiello said in his blog. It appears to me that everyone's just recycling his comments, not finding out from their own on-set sources. -- KatRose, 08:19:39 04/25/07 Wed [1]

[Edit]

[> [> [> [> Yeah, I know. But isn't that typical of media anymore. Most news sources issue the same story. It's hard to find what I term a "real" story. -- AmyLynn, 08:25:43 04/25/07 Wed [1]
