Subject: When I first moved into my new department, my office was so cold I thought I could hang meat and it would keep for months. So I got a small space heater. That was great for about 5 weeks, then one morning as I sat at my desk I smelled something funny. Given that I'm in the basement of a building that has a Sump Pump alarm for a reason, I wasn't too concerned until I saw smoke coming out of the wall plug! I quickly turned off and disconnected the heater. When my fire marshalls came by, they clipped the cord so I couldn't use that heater again (the plug was partially melted, so I wasn't about to use it anyway!). I moved into my new (bigger) office on Tuesday. It's slightly warmer than the meat locker, but I still feel the need to have a scarf and gloves handy. LOL

Why do they clip the cord? Can't it be fixed? Is there a problem with the heater or that the outlet couldn't handle the power? I feel bad for the little heater. He was heating, he was doing his job, and bam-o, he has one little meltdown and gets clipped. Awww. (LOL)

So you're moving up to a warmer meat-locker! Good for you! Our heat is back on and hasn't quit running yet. I predict that tomorrow it will feel like a tropical island in here. (Good thing I don't work here on Fridays. That gives them time to try and regulate the temp for Monday.)

A few weeks ago at the office where I volunteer, it was very cold in the building. VERY cold. One of the workers decided to plug in the space heater. With a barely perceptible *click* it sprang to life and put out a bit of heat ..........and then blew out the computer network connection and turned itself off. No computers, no network, no printer, no connection to the digital copier, no nothing. And we were in the middle of printing and copying. So the manager came over and my coworker read the electrical panel location off the outlet to the manager, who promptly went in search of the proper electrical panel to fix the breaker. Only then do I find out that nowhere do we have a master location list of the electric panels. So the manager had to search throughout the facility to locate the proper panel. But he couldn't find it. So he went around and checked again. And again. And then I go read off the panel name AGAIN, and we find out that there was a miscommunication --- he'd spent all his time looking for the wrong panel, one that didn't exist. How two people standing right next to each other can miscommunicate what is right in front of them, I will never know. I laughed then and I laugh now just thinking about it. I left right after we figured out the mistake and all in all a couple hours passed with no power to our office. I don't know what they did with the space heater.
