Decent Homes Not Slums!

The Irish Republican Socialist Party have called on the Housing
Executive to heed residents' calls and have Glen Court flat complex
pulled down once and for all.

A spokesperson for the Derry IRSP said: "Today's apartment fire could
well have caused further damage or even loss of life to residents
living within the Glen Court flats if it hadn't have been for the
promptness of local firefighters, who truly deserve all our credit. We
can only be thankful that lives were not lost.

"Sadly this latest incident again raises the issue of Glen Court
complex that, in spite of recent minor improvements such as external
lighting made by the Housing Executive, local residents' concerns must
be finally addressed. Have existing residents re-housed and the
complex pulled down."

The spokesperson concluded by stating: "It is common knowledge that
this type of housing is not just a health and safety hazard but a
deteriorating eyesore. The people of this city since the days of the
civil rights campaigns, after taking to the streets demanding decent
homes for all, deserve better than this. Residents of the Glen deserve
decent homes and a better quality of life, not slums."
