I have looked at the Scottish Church Records from 1400 to 1700 and could find the spelling Caddle,Cadle and Cadell. If you look at the earliest spelling of Stephen Caudill it is spelled Caudle. In The Virginia Genealogist,vol26,#1,index 1982, there is a listing for Mary Lupo m. Thomas Cawdell. The Lupo family name was originally Almaliach who were Spanish Jews expelled from Spain. They were maried in London, Eng. 20 June 1606.
In Cavaliers & Pioneers 1623-66, vol 1,p.55, there is mention of a Phillipp Caudell being transported to the colonies VA. In volumes II and III the name is spelled Caudle, Cawdle, and Caudall.
I was able to print four pages of the name Caudle,Cawdell,Cawdle in the Gloucestershire area of Eng.with dates from 1500s.
The Scots came to America starting in 1740. A historical piece about the Battle of Kings Mountain mentions the Highland Scots, who came in 1770, fighting with the British.
I spoke with Mr.Whitehead, mountain historian, and he said that the Caudills were seven families who came to America from England. The were Huguenot French who escaped the Inquisition and went to England at the time of Henry VIII.
If you were French in the colonies in 1754 at the time of the French Indian War you might not announce your heritage.
It is a thought for further consideration.
Happy New Year.
