The standard nut just touches(only just)on the radius of the barrel where the flat flange at the base curves up.
When hot the barrel can get pulled over to one side by a tiny amount and apparently this is what tightens up the piston cylinder gap.
You can just grind a small radius on your own nuts to give clearance. I agree they are awkward b's to get too. I modified a socket and extension bar to get to them.
