New Hartford budget cuts could hurt education

BY KURT MOFFETT REPUBLICAN-AMERICAN

NEW HARTFORD — The Board of Finance was working late Tuesday night in an effort to avoid a tax increase in 2011-12.

While a tax increase seems unavoidable, the board had at least cut the potential increase in half. Earlier this month, the board was looking at a 5.69 percent increase.

At one point during Tuesday's meeting, board Chairman Bernard J. Witte said the increase was down to 2.33 percent. That would bring the tax rate from 23.98 mills to roughly 24.54 mills.

For a homeowner with property valued at $200,000, the tax bill would jump $112, from $4,796 to $4,908.
