Subject: This is why we need a Senior Center


Mr. Zitzkat, you are sadly under-informed! The Senior Center on the third floor of Town Hall is a vital place for the 1711 people who have participated in the activities for the past 4 months.

Did you know that 23% of the population of New Hartford is 55 and over, which qualifies them as a senior? Last year our membership increased 25%. The baby boomers are aging and will only expand that number. Why not join – it’s only $7.50 per year.

Activities at the Center include coffee hour, fitness classes four days a week (for a quarterly total of 633), line dancing, book club, a walking group meets in inclement weather, crafts (we made baby blankets for infants in New Orleans and now are making scarves for college age former foster children). Currently a “Food for Life” 6 week course is going on each Wednesday. A VNA flu clinic was held recently. A “Life Line Screening” program will be held next week free of charge thanks to a grant from WCAAA. By the way, the seniors don’t play checkers, they play bingo! I’m sure there will be more programs as we now have a part-time Senior Director.

What will happen when the contract expires in 2011? Where will the Seniors go? The library doesn’t accommodate a fitness class of 20 and the schools are occupied during the day.
