EDITORIAL: Endorsement: Ann Brickley for U.S. Congress, First District
Published: Friday, October 29, 2010

John Larson is a skilled politician. He can debate circles around most people. On cue, he can fill a room with union hall-style oratory.

You can’t question the appeal of his populist message about looking out for the working man and restoring America’s prominence as a manufacturer of goods.

And John Larson — a defender of Congress’ controversial “earmarking” process — has been effective in bringing millions of federal dollars to projects in Torrington, New Hartford and elsewhere in his district.

The problem, after 12 years in office, is that Congressman Larson believes too much of his own spin.

By the very nature of his job description as #4 in the Democratic House leadership, Larson’s allegiance must lie with carrying out House Speaker Nancy Pelosi’s agenda. It comes before Connecticut, it comes before the 1st District.

We are in the midst of a huge national backlash against Pelosi’s management of taxing and spending policies that affect the economy, and against the federal health care reform bill that Pelosi and Larson shepherded through Congress.

Unlike all recent past elections in the 1st District, this year Larson finds himself with a very credible challenger.

Republican Ann Brickley has been a consistent, reasonable, moderate voice in her campaign against Larson this year, and she deserves your support on Nov. 2.

We feel she would bring the 1st District seat back around to being about Connecticut’s interests, after years of having a congressman who long ago got caught up as a key lieutenant in an inside-the-Beltway partisan war that has very little to do with what is good for Torrington, Winsted, New Hartford and our state.

Ann Brickley is an engineer, not a politician, not a lawyer. At a time when the 1st District needs job creation above all else, this former business efficiency expert is the right person to help Congress turn around a toxic economic environment.

We believe she would not only be a strong voice in Washington, but an excellent spokesperson for Connecticut at a time when the state is ranked near the bottom in its reputation for operating a business.

For 1st District Congress, we endorse Ann Brickley on Nov. 2.

We like John Larson. He’s good at what he does. But he needs some time off to get back in touch with the realities facing the voters who sent him to Washington in the first place.

CORRECTION: An earlier version of this editorial made reference to Congressman John Larson's "16 years in office." He has served in the U.S. Congress for 12 years (six two-year terms), not 16 years.
