New Hartford contributes to fight against lake weed

NEW HARTFORD -- A fast-growing plant known as large-leaf pond weed has been found in West Hill Lake, and officials are scrambling to remove it before it spreads.

Selectmen this week unanimously approved contributing $900 to the $2,700 removal process, which is taking place now in three small areas: a shallow spot in the center of the lake, a cove on the west side, and the south shore.

The remainder of the cost will be split among homeowners associations at the lake, a private beach club, two Boy Scout camps that have waterfront property and neighboring Barkhamsted, which will kick in $300. A small portion of the lake is in that town.

"It was a simple decision. We have to do this if we want to maintain our lake as one of the cleanest in the state," said First Selectman Daniel V. Jerram.
