Subject: Semester Just about Over

Things have been quite busy lately, and I probably have been neglecting this board. Next week, however, Tunxis ends, and Trinity already has ended, so my kids after one more exam each, will wind down for the summer. And for me and my wife that means no more transporting kids all over the state. Not going the traditional route does have its drawbacks, but also has rewards.

My son who just turned 16 is taking driving lessons, and soon he will be able to get himself to whereever he has to go. My daughter, who is only 12, will still need rights, however.

This was a good semester for both kids. My son did well in Ancient Greek, English and expects to do well in US History. My daughter got her first front page by line on the Tunxis newspaper (she is on the Newspaper staff), and she expects to do well in History and French. Altogether, it has been a happy, albeit busy semester.

If my son wanted, he could finish up his Associate's degree this summer, but he is in no hurry to get to a four year school. He wants to be at least 17 before he starts, a point of view I personally do not understand. He also has not made up his mind whether he wants to apply as a Freshman or as a Junior. My decided preference is to enter as a Junior. Let him spend the money for the two years he saved on graduate school.

I guess what I really do not understand is why others have not done what we have done and are doing. We get an infinitely better education, potentially save two years of college tuition, and get the process through fairly quickly. I have been very open about skipping high school from the very start. I guess I don't really understand why this isn't more of a fad than it is. (Believe me, there are plenty of other kids doing the same thing, just none from New Hartford.)

What advantage would anyone see in going to high school?
