New Hartford tab for town expenses gets easy passage

NEW HARTFORD — Voters here on Tuesday approved a budget that will increase taxes by just under 1 percent, and local spending by 1.6 percent.
Unofficial results had the budget approved by a comfortable margin: 267-88.
First Selectman Daniel V. Jerram said the $21.5 million spending plan was the product of hard work by volunteer officials, and their effort to protect local taxpayers from a larger increase will not be abandoned if the state is forced to reduce municipal aid.
Negotiations continue as Gov. Dannel P. Malloy seeks $2 billion in concessions from state employee unions, and Malloy's team hopes to have an agreement later this week. The administration has promised thousands of layoffs and cuts to municipal aid if those concessions are not agreed to, and that has officials in most towns calculating alternatives
