I am very much opposed to the contract and the way it was handled, however, I am afraid the horse has already left the barn. Short of outright criminal fraud there is little to no chance of over turning this contract. The binding arbitration statutes are very clear and are not in the towns favor. Once a contract is approved by the BoE and put on file at the town clerks office, there is a 30 day window for it to be rejected by the legislative body (voters). >Under normal circumstances, no one in town even knows about the contract other than the town clerk and maybe the selectmen. It was brought to our attention this year because it was so outrageous that the selectmen felt the need for the town to vote on it. Because of the 30 day
window it would be next to impossile to have a legitimate vote using the normal polling places and times. What needs to be changed is the binding arbitration law. It ties the hands of the towns and is totally slanted to the unions. Everyone knows this but the democratic legislators in Hartford refuse to even open up for discussion any changes to this law. Pressure should be put on them to level the playing field.
And another thing, why is the superintendent of schools hired by the BoE? He is paid by the town and should be hired by the board of selectman just like the highway superintendent and all the other positions. Maybe this way we could get someone who had the towns best interest in mind and was not in bed with the teachers union.
