Subject: Ski Report - Mont Tremblant

We just returned from a six day vacation at Mont Tremblant, in Quebec, about 100 miles north of Montreal. In my opinion, Tremblant is the best ski area that I have visited in North America.

I have skied in a lot of places: Taos, Killington, Mt Snow, Stowe, Chamonix, Val d'Iser, Innsbruck. Although my no-guts-no-glory days are long over, I still like to cruise. I stick to the easy trails now.

Mont Tremblant, with its pedestrian village has to be the biggest destination resort in the East. It is an upscale resort (Catherine Zeta Jones was reputed to be there while I was this last week, although, unfortunately, I didn't see her.) It's a tad pricey, but in reality so are many ski areas that offer a lot less. It is an expert mountain, although I only did two very short black diamonds and still had lots of fun on the beginner and intermediate trails.

If you don't already ski fairly well, I don't recommend going to Mont Tremblant to learn how to ski. Some of their green circle trails are actually much more difficult than black diamonds at Sundown. "Biere en bas" for example, gets skied off fairly fast, and although labled "Easy," it is a legitimate intermediate/difficult. Several other trails are like that too. Their intermediates are more difficult than anything at Sundown.

We stayed at a condo fifty feet from the gondola, and could come up for hot chocolate between runs. Very satisfying. The Gondola claims to take you to the top in 9 minutes, and it is fast, but I don't think that fast. MT has a verticle drop of 2,100 feet.

I strongly recomment Tremblant as the ideal site for a ski vacation. It compares favorably with some of the best resorts in Europe, and in fact, reminds me somewhat of Chammonix. The town of Chamonix and the pedestrian village of Tremblant have the same ambiance. Beautiful place, beautiful skiing. Great vacation.
