1984 MONTE CARLO SS! IGNITION SWITH IS STUCK IN THE FORWARD POSITION( IT WOULD NOT TURN BACK AND ALLOW TO TAKE KEy OUT) SO I REPLACED THE IGNITION SWITCH BUT ITS THE SAME PROBLEM WITH THE NEW SWITCH AND KEY!! DOES ANYONE HAVE ANY IDEA WHAT COULD BE CAUSING THIS? THE MECHANIC CHECKED OUT A FEW THINGS AND IT DIDNT WORK EITHER!!

I'm having same problem,a buddy said check the rods in column. Haven't had a chance to check yet,let me know what solves the problem.

The first thing I would check would be the actual ignition switch located at the bottom of the column under the dash where the rod snaps in. It should be a rectangular white(sometimes gray) plastic box bolted to the column. They are usually the culprit! Unless the tilt mechanism is loose then it could be the rods binding inside the column.

IF YOU HAVE A FLOOR SHIFT OR EVEN A COLUMN SHIFT THE SHIFTER MUST BE BACK ALL THE WAY IN PARK FOR THE KEY TO RELEASE.
I HAVE SEEN WORN COLUMNS EVEN IN PARK THE KEY WOULD NOT RELEASE AND YOU HAD TO GRAB THE BELL ON THE COLUMN AND GIVE IT A LITTLE HELP SO IT WILL GO ALL THE WAY "HOME" AND RELEASE THE KEY.

I FOR ONE NEVER SAID ANYTHING ABOUT A MOTOR OR TRANSMISSION. FIRST BEFORE YOU CAN GET HELP YOU WILL HAVE GO BACK TO THE FIRST OR MAYBE THE SECOND GRADE AND LEARN TO PAY ATTENTION...........
[> Subject: I had a similar problem in a mid-90s GM car and I didn't have battery power to the accessory circuit and it wouldn't allow the key to go back from the "run" position. I went through the whole replace the key switch process with it not being fixed and it turned out to be the battery power thing.
