Subject: Frankie "Mad Man" Taylor Wins final race of the 2001 Season

On November 9th, 20 teams showed up to claim the top 8 positions in the final race of the 2001 season at Texas Raceway. This race was dedicated to “Big” Jim Brooks (a fellow Pro Mod racer) who passed away on November 3rd due to complications of cancer. Gaylen Smith led by 8 points going into this race over Frankie Taylor. These two drivers have alternated between first and second place all season long. It came down to Gaylen needing to stay one round ahead of Frankie and the semi-final round was going to tell the story. Frankie qualified #1 with a 4.14 and Gaylen qualified #5 with a 4.53 which put these two drivers on the same side of the ladder which meant they would meet up in the semi-finals if both cars made it through round one. Well, both cars won the first round but Gaylen’s throttle hung wide open at the top end of the track which bent a pushrod and broke a lifter. He could not get the car ready for the semi’s which gave Frankie a competition bye run into the final round and also the points championship. Frankie is a very competitive racer and did not want to win that way but never the less, he is the 2001 Texas Raceway Points Champion.

Round 1: #4 David Hugo – 4.81 at 119 mph #5 Gaylen Smith (W) 4.25 at 159 mph

#3 Thomas Myers (W) 4.45 at 157 mph
#6 Alfred Whiteside - broke
#2 Nathan Martin – 4.69 at 157 mph
#7 Pat Edwards (W) 4.52 at 154 mph

#1 Frankie Taylor (W) 4.13 at 173 mph
#8 Tommy Adams – 4.63 at 152 mph

Round 2:

#7 Pat Edwards - 4.58 at 155 mph
#3 Thomas Myers (W) 4.52 at 156 mph

#1 Frankie Taylor (W) 4.12 at 171 mph
#5 Gaylen Smith - broke

Round 3:

#1 Frankie Taylor (W) 4.20 at 167 mph
#3 Thomas Myers (RU) 4.42 at 158 mph

Other drivers that did not make the top 8 were: Robert Smith (4.67), Mark Walker (4.71), Ron Muenks (4.73), Bobby Booth (4.77), Conrad Ignasiak (4.90), Joe Baldobino (4.94), Greg Green (4.96), Marty Neely (4.98), Ronnie Niswanger (5.06) Kim Smith (5.18), Chuck Bishop (5.21) and HT Wilson (5.94). I would also like to mention that as a Pro Mod Family, our thoughts and prayers go out to young Madison Jones, daughter of Matt and Amy Jones of the BMF Pro Mod Team. Madison was recently diagnosed with cancer and we want to wish her well in her road to recovery. Looking forward to seeing what 2002 will bring. See you next year.
