The son of the late Frank Shirley is seeking information on the Service History of him. His son has found a photograph of him in Alanbrooke Troop, Boys Bty, at Christmas 1949. Are there any ex boys who can add to Franks Service history.
He did serve as a Bdr on the guns with 12/20 Regt in Malaya 60 - 63, I have been able, with the help of fellow 12 Minden Bty contacts to fill this gap. We now hope that our more senior members and visitors can fill in the Boy Service bit.Thank You

Hi David,

Thanks for your messages. I'm glad you are of the same opinion as I and believe me, I'd help you with the costs if it became necessary, but I don't think it ever will. Mind you I hope Paddy's opinion doesn't spread too far; scrap metal is fetching a lot of cash now, as evidenced by the plethora of rag-and-bone men plagueing the estate lately. Some Minister might get ideas about the "scrap metal" dotted about various military establishments. Talking of Paddy, I'm hoping he will come up with my wife's name, just so we can keep communicating!

Jack, your defence of Ossie Austin is commendable, but he has not been attacked. The gun is not a religious icon, it is a cold, heavy heap of metal. Usually covered in mud grass and Gods knows what, and always left me with a bruised right knee, I was glad to get off the bloody things. It bothers me not if the CO down there even has a dog. The point of the article was a reminder that the association has 200 or so members. Not all will attend the functions, but perhaps many have a curiousity about how other members and old mates have weathered down the years. In todays tech age, overprinting a few photographs is not rocket science, it's cost!
The wasp and spiteful has me puzzled, however life is too short to wonder too long about it. Well done on using the Forum as forums are intended to be used. So, take care now, and, ah, love to Dorothy!

To Paddy,

Re the naming of Munchkins:- I reckoned without David, who really "has his finger on the pulse." His memory for names has obviously not been affected like mine! I still don't agree with you about the gun though!! By the way, how big are the wasps in Australia?

I enjoyed the May/June issue of the Trumpter, but I'm sure I could have enjoyed it more if I had been able to match names to the faces. It is reasonable to assume there are members who would or could not attend reunions. To me and perhaps to them also, the gathering of the 10 members around the little tree might just as well have been the munchkins waiting for Dorothy. Because apart from Teddys noble features, there is no indication as to who you are! I should think this would also apply to the reunion photos yet to appear.
I am aware that to add names to photos would involve extra costs. However, mention has already been made of a 'service fee' for a gun at Larkhill. Why? Colours! It has always been my understanding our colours are serving guns on parade or in action, with very few exceptions. I could be wrong in which case I can expect a barrage of emails.
If I'm not. Then a reality check might suggest that members are paying a service fee for a piece of obsolete scrap which has been brightly painted and strategially placed to act as a convenience for the CO's dog?
Perhaps the committee would give consideration to letting none attending members, 200/50 know the names on enough of the photes to allow the memories and the curiosity to bridge 50 years.

Taffy Morris. This may be a bit late in the day, your message was posted Dec 23rd 2005, but I have just come across it via a computer 'techie' friend of my Son's. I was that '1st Troop commander' at Bramcote then went on to 1RHA, then retired in 82 after a posting in Belize. I have lived in NI near Belfast ever since running my own furniture workshop. Married with a not so young family and believe it or not still cross country skiing. In fact off to Norway (near Lillehammer) just after Christmas for a week as an assistant group leader to my nephew who is running a course for novice skiers. The punters just love that military touch of grip, drive and motivation!
Feel free to make contact via my e-mail address and I can send some shots of sgt Noble and Mansergh troop members on a trip we did to the Nijmegen marches.
All the best. Andrew klimacki

With the reunion coming up, could anyone ask if Rick Inglis [Gunn] 56 to 58 has ever been heard from? He married a local Hereford girl called Liz when he mustered, and I had a couple of letters from them when I was in Malaya However, with the passing of the years contact was broken. I can't even remember what Regt.,they went to. Germany I think. If anyone can recall them, perhaps they would email me.

Good Morming David, no question of any offence and certainly no criticism of the board. I think you have all done a fantastic job in bringing together ex boy soldiers who might otherwise have died off with only the memory of their youth. the web is evident that most of us have, or will survive into senility, still in contact with the actuality of our days of glory.
As to the PJM. The cock ups over that medal can be laid at a source that has maintained a reputation for screwing its troops around for a couple of hundred years. The westminister shirt lifters brigade. Christ! there is never an Iraqi with a second hand car around when you need him?.

David, it was a wind-up. The web is getting stale, and I think it could do with a little spicing up. Besides, warm beer on a cold day is not bad. Ugh! Regards The PJM, it is a medal given to those who were in Malaya in the 50's to the early 60's. It is being awarded by the Goverment of Malaysia and I have yet to hear of anyone who has ever received it through the post. I do know that a couple of the lads have had it pinned on at the malaysian High Commissions and Embassies. The Aussies, Kiwis, and other c'wealth Goverments quickly granted their troops the right to receive and wear it. However, that useless bunch of tossers that run around westminister with their dainty brown fingers rapped around their civil servant degrees delayed the process for Brit troops. Hence the question. There is a few of the exboys that served in malaya and Borneo. Regards, Paddy

I am not the David who posted the first message re warm beer etc. I am an ex boy who served in Malaya and Borneo 1960 to 1963 with 20 Regt RA, and I received my PJM through the post, the reason that I received it through the post is long and boring, surfice to say that it cost me something in the region of £20 plus a return trip to North East Birmingham from Hereford for a (failed) presentation. But I now have it and have had it hung with my other medals and wore it with pride on Rememberance Day. Regards to you Paddy.

I have asked a couple of questions of members before, but never received any answers. Now that begins to tell me you Brits are either not all that well educated, too sozzled with your warm beer,or the answers lay beyond the reach of the remote..Just Kidding? Maybe!
However, always the optimist I shall ask another, Being. Has any one that you know off ever actually received the PJM medal other than those that fronted up at High comms or Embasssies? I mean recieving it in the time honoured English way. By 2nd class post on a wet windy day. Regards and remember, if most of you could swim you could be Irish.. bye, bye.

I hope I am not the only one left still around. There must be somebody out there who was in Boys Battery at the same time as I.

Unfortunately I am unable to remember my troop, but my NCO was Sgt. McAdam. We joined at The Royal Military Academy in July 1946 and a short time later were moved to Cambridge Barracks.

I mustered out in 1948 and went to Horsham then Gravesend. From there I went to Carters Baracks, Bulford before going to Pontefract to join 23 Bty, 27 HAA. Regt.

We were sent to Hong Kong in 1949 and I left there in 1953. After disembarkation leave I went to Lippstadt in BOAR with a medium regiment until I purchased my discharge in 1954.

If anybody remembers me, I would enjoy hearing from them.

I now live in Australia.

Just discovered this fantastic website, spent half an hour looking throughy it. Lots of familiar names.
I was a boy NCO in Ramsey Troop at Rhyl early 50's, later moved to Hereford and mustered from there during the first term.Finnished up as BSM of 44 Batery before going to the Tower of London as a Yeoman Warder.
Retired now, and tasting the delights of only doing what I wish, that is "Town Crying" and "Toast Mastering".
If anyone remembers me get in touch, if you wish.

The best way to contact old friends and stay in touch is to join YOUR Association. All you have to do is go to the Homepage, download the form and send off a fiver.
You will then get the full members list with contact details and all the benefits of membership.
Better still....Join the Assn,`Join Up` and then come to the reunion together. Its Coventry this year so easy to get to (Spitting Distance of Junc 2 M6)We always have a great time and you will be made very welcome. Think of all the new friends you could make.
(I will even show you around Nuneaton if you want as I live here.) See you in April ????????

Hi George, Sorry I have only just found your reply to my Post. I can remember the name "Evans" although I am afraid I can't put a face to it. I don't suppose you are on one of the photos of Milne Troop in the Gallery? I was in Germany in 1946! My father was stationed in Bielefeld and my mother and her 6 kids (me included!) went to live in Brackwede, which is next to Bielefeld. I had my 12th birthday while we were there and attended a school for British Families children, which was in what was then called 54 Reinforcement Holding Unit. It was an ex German Army Barracks. 50 RHU was another one on the same road. I wonder if you were stationed in one of them? Anyway, great to hear from you. If you are going to the next reunion, I hope we will meet up.

I've looked through all the messages on this page in the hope of coming across someone from my era. I'm not the only one of that vintage to own a computer: Dave Flett is in regular Email correspondance! Anyone else out there? And does anyone know the whereabouts of Roger Stephens, AKA "Steve"? If your Army number began 225356** you must be somewhere in that era.

I have, at last managed to get into your web site and shall spend time looking at it and am impressed with what I see so far. I was a boy entry at Cambrige Barracks Woolwich 23.2.48 went on to Rhyl where I mustered and went to 76th HAA on the Isle of Wight then to Korea, 11th Sphinx Battery then to 120 Mortar Battery. after Korea was with 48th Field Regt in Germany then Malaya until demob. I have many fond memories of my army service and am in touch with Bob Critchley,Terry Padget, Tommy Wall and Norman Alderson but would welcome contact with any that may remeber me.Would very much like info on 1157937 Pete Doyle we were great mates furing the Malayan episode. Living now in Aberdeen it does not give me very much chance to take part in your reunions which is sad for me but your newsletters are very welcome. Am currently Treasurer and Secretary of the Northeast Scotland BKVA, have a look at our web site if you can www.communigate.co.uk/ne/nescot you may find old pals on our site.

Hello Bertie Burton here!

Any Hornby Troop lads out there? Remember we won Champion Troop! the Troop Sergeants were Sgt Parvez and Sgt Smith (killed in an accident in Canada as a WO2), the Troop Commander was Lt Meres.

Only ever saw one of us again, met Ian Holden(?), the Junior BSM in a Canadian NAAFI in BATUS in 1988. By then, we had both reached the dizzy heights of LBDR and just about had enough for a beer each!

I saw on the news recently that the 47th Ten Tors expedition over Dartmoor was called off and that all the youngsters taking part were taken of the moor owing to very inclement weather. I went on the Ten Tors in 1961 with other Lads from Hornby Troop, and I remember other Troops entering teams anyone else recall going on this.
We travelled down to Dartmoor in Bedford three Tonners, and an old permanent staff sweat by the name of Reg was the driver.
