First sergeant- 'Bagde' Prout
also remember- Sgt Slater (half-German band from European front, went sick everytime a far east posting came up).
Sgt Tozer paratrooper from Arnhem, brilliant leader.
Lt 'Danny' Mclean, who did not report the cigarette thieves.
John Napier who died recently, 'Swiper' Young who became an RSPCA inspector and died locally in a yachting accident.
I spent the rest of my army career in 50 Fld Bty RA, 23Fld Regt RA.
The first four years under the command of Major 'Jack' Tyrell RA. MC. where the best days of my life. The men worship jack like a god, national servicement queued up to sign on. Unfortunately, when he left we had the worst CO imaginable and gradually things went to pot, with Jacks boys struggling to maintain the spirit as our numbers dwindled.
Thereafter I became an insurance salesman, newsagent, rum punch skipper in the Carribean, yacht charter repairman and finally retired to Cornwall. But it was Boy Service that turned a 14 year old illiterate invalide into an adult. Tough but worth it.
