I'm here for you.............. Part 2
She clicked off the cell phone and headed straight back into the restaurant. She needed a favour from the General and this Marine was in no mood to take no for an answer.
She headed for the table where her colleagues were sat laughing and joking.
“General can I have a word Sir please?”
From the look on her face, the General knew this was serious. He got up from the table and headed outside with her.
Mac explained the situation to him, the details of the call that she had just had with Harm and her need to get to him urgently.
“What is it with you two?” The General enquired “Is there something going on that I should know about?
“Sir please I must get back to DC tonight. I need to be with Harm, he needs me”
“I don't understand this, the two of you take great pains to tell me that there is nothing going on that you are just co-workers and yet here you are behaving like a neurotic girlfriend desperate to get back to her boyfriend”
“Sir, please I need to be with Cmdr Rabb, he needs me, I have to be there for him Sir, please”
“There is something isn't there, even if you haven't admitted it to yourselves yet”
“Yes sir, I love him, always have and I'd do anything to help him Sir, he needs me now more than ever, please sir, I have to be back in DC tonight”
“Does he know?”
“No sir”
“Ok, I'll make couple of calls, see what I can do but don't expect miracles”
“Thank you Sir, I'll have my bags backed in 10 minutes, be ready to leave in 15”.
“You really are one squared away Marine, though god only knows why you fell in love with a squid”
Mac smiled as she turned away and headed back to her room. She changed back into her uniform and headed back to the restaurant.
The others in their group were surprised to see her back in uniform again. The General had been in a quite corner of the restaurant on the telephone and headed over as soon as he saw her.
“Ok Colonel. Your in luck, there is a flight leaving the base in 30 minutes, transport to Norfolk. That's the closest I can get you.” If you can get there in time, they will take you but they won't hold the flight”
Even as he was finishing the sentence Mac was headed out of the door and back towards the base.
She caught the flight with 7 minutes to spare.
The flight landed at 0630hrs. Mac headed straight from Norfolk to JAG where she knew Harm would be. Catching a ride with a Marine transport had been a god send and much quicker than having to travel by a civilian flight.
She arrived at JAG, tired but desperate to see Harm. She walked into the bullpen, dropped her bags into her office and went to seek out Harm. PO Coates was at her desk, Is Cmdr Rabb in. PO Coates stood up, surprised to see the Colonel.
“Yes Ma'am”
Mac knocked on the door and a deflated voice told her to come in
She opened he door to find Harm sitting behind the General's desk.
She turned to PO Coates who was watching as she walked in.
“PO, we are not be disturbed, no matter what for the next 15 minutes, is that understood?”
“Yes Ma'am”.
With the Mac closed the door behind her.
In stead of taking her usual place in one of the chairs in front of the desk she went straight around to the otherside of the desk and immediately craddled Harm in her arms.
“Mac, how did you get here so quickly?”
“The General pulled a few strings and got me on a transport flight to Norfolk. I came straight here”
“You must be exhausted, travelling all night”
“I don't care about that, I had to come and see you, to be here for you”
She knelt down next to his chair to look into his face.
What she saw was such sadness and fear, it frightened her.
“Sarah...... what am I going to do, if I loose her”
“Harm, you're not going to loose her. She's strong she going to be ok, but she needs you to be strong for her now also. Can you do that?”
“I can with you here, you give me strength Sarah, I don't think I could get through this without you being here”
“I'm here for you......... now and whenever you need me ok”
“Ok”
|”Did you get any rest last night?”
“No, not really”.
“Ok, what appointments do you have today?”
“None, I cleared the schedule, can't focus, nothing much on”
“Ok, so you can take the rest of the day of, come home with me and get some rest, before we travel to Blacksburg later today”
“I can't, I'm acting JAG”
“Sturgis will cover, the General has cleared it. The General is coming back tomorrow and Sturgis will cover for you for the rest of today”
“But I.......”
“Don't argue, now get your things and we're going home, via my place so I can get some clothes suitable for DC. All I have in my bag is a pair of shorts and a swim suit”
“Ok, Sarah................ Thanks”
With that Mac opened the door. PO Coates was hovering, clearly having been trying to listen.
“PO Coates, Cmdr Rabb will be taking the rest of the day off. Cmdr Turner will be covering his duties as acting JAG until the General's return tomorrow.”
“Yes Ma'am”
As the Colonel was giving her these orders, PO Coates noticed that Cmdr Rabb just stood silently behind the Colonel not saying a word and simply staring at the floor.
After she had finished talking, the Colonel turned to Cmdr Rabb and simply said
“Come on, lets get you home”
Without a word he followed.
