I'm here for you.............. Part 3
The journey back to Harms apartment was quiet. He simply sat in the passenger seat of his car while Mac drove and stared out of the window. The only stop was at her apartment so that she could pick up some clothes. He stayed in the car.
He was exhausted she could see that. He clearly hadn't slept in days and the travelling backwards and forward between DC and Blacksburg was impossible.
They arrived at Harm's apartment and without a word he got out of the car and entered the building. They rode in he elevator in silence and as he turned the key in the lock to his apartment door he paused,
“Thanks Mac”
“Come on let's get you inside”
She put her bags down and he threw his keys on the small table in front of the window.
“ I think we both need some rest before be head off to see Mattie. Go and lay down on the bed and I'll give you a shout when it is time to go”
“I can't sleep Mac. I just keen seeing pictures of her, laying there, in the hospital”
“Please Harm, just try. I'll be right here on the couch”
“You said you were here for me”
“And I am”
“Then stay with me. I don't want to be alone”
They headed off into the bedroom. It wouldn't be the first time they had laid down on the same bed together, or even slept in the same bed. She kept reminding herself that he needed her, didn't want to be alone, nothing more.
He lay down on the bed and she spooned in behind him, cradling him in her arms.
“Thanks Mac”
“Any time”
Mac wasn't sure what it was that woke her but she was suddenly aware of a strange sensation, she was cocooned by something warm. She opened her eyes and then remembered she was at Harm's. At some point they had both fallen asleep and at some time during that time they had changed positions. She was now laying cradled in his arms, his huge frame surrounding her smaller body, one leg resting over hers and his arms crossed in front of her. His head was slightly above hers and she could feel his breath on her hair as he slept.
She was overwhelmed with a sense of security and contentment she had not felt in a long time, if ever. He made her feel safe and secure and it wasn't a feeling she was ready to part with easily but she had to be strong for him, he needed her and this had to be about what he needed and not her own hopes and desires.
The light in the apartment was dim and she was suddenly very aware of the journey that they needed to make.
“Harm” she called gently so as not to startle him. He didn't move
“Harm, come on wake up”
“Not yet, soon” came the reply
“Harm we need to get up”
“Why, just stay with me for a little while longer Sarah, please”
“Harm, come on”
“Just a little while longer, one more kiss, please”
She was a little taken a back, kiss, what did he mean, he must be dreaming.
“Harm come on , we need to get going, to go and see Mattie” She tapped his arms and shook him gently
With that he stirred.
“What, what time is it. Mac what are you....... oh yeah that's right, you brought me home”
He loosened his grip on her and rolled over, releasing her from her secure confinement.
He rubbed his eyes and swung his legs over the side of the bed.
“What time is it?”
“A little after 5”
“Ok, I need to get going”
“We need to get going, I'm coming with you. I told you, I'm hear for you”
He turned his head slightly to look over his shoulder and smiled softly at her.
