I'm here for you.............. Part 4
The journey to Blacksburg was tiring but they made good time. Harm drove, he was feeling slightly better after the few hours sleep he had managed to get snuggled up to Mac. I was the first sleep he had had in almost 3 days and he didn't think he would have been able to do it without her.
God he really needed her right now. The realisation of how much was frightening. They spoke occasionally on the way down. Mac told him about Vukovic and their case in San Diego and her doubts about his ethics. Even Harm didn't think he would stoop that low, but as Mac pointed out even Harm had pulled some stunts in his time, the ceiling in the Court room had never quite been the same since he opened up a semi automatic into it.
“You ducked” he pointed out
“Marines don't duck, we take over” she reminded him just as she had all those years ago.
They drove straight to the hospital and it was late when they got there.
The nurses all seemed to recognise him and called him by his name, a couple were a bit suspicious of the beautiful lady that seemed to be accompanying him on this visit.
Mac followed him straight to Mattie's room. The doctor was no where to be seen and Harm immediately asked one of the nurses if he was still around. She confirmed that he was and was with another patient but she would let him know that Harm was here.
Harm walked over to the bed and sat down and immediately took Mattie's hand.
“Hey Mattie, how are you today, sorry I wasn't here earlier. I've brought someone with me today, hope you don't mind. Mac wanted to come and see how you were doing”
Harm turned to Mac and gestured to her to come forward.
“Hi Mattie, it's Mac”
“Mac's been to San Diego, apparently it's a bit warmer there than it is here. She only got back early this morning and insisted on coming here to see you. We all miss you Mattie, you need to wake up sweetheart, I've so much to tell you and to show you.”
The doctor walked in and picked up her chart.
“How is she doing doctor?”
“Holding her own Mr Rabb. As I told you before it's a waiting game, she could wake up today, tomorrow, next week, next month, we just don't know.”
“There must be something else we can do, please” Mac rested her hand on Harms upper arm.
“I'm sure he's doing everything he can Harm, you need to be patient”
“But she needs to wake up”. Harm turned back to Mattie and sat down in the chair.
Mac followed the Doctor out of Mattie's room.
“Doctor, I'm Sarah Mackenzie, a friend of Harm's and Mattie's, is there anything else you can tell me”
“Are you there Sarah he keeps referring to?”
“I'm not sure what you mean”
“The conversations he keeps having with Mattie, he keeps referring to a Sarah and to a Mac, I presume you are the Sarah.”
“No, Sarah is the name of his plane, I'm Mac, although I am also Sarah”
“Do you have any influence over him Ms. Mackenzie, because some of my staff are getting very concerned about him. He's always here talking to her, hardly sleeps, or eats”
“I'll try Doctor but he thinks of Mattie like a daughter. Is there anything we can do for Mattie?”
“Talking to her like Mr. Rabb has been may help, she may be able to hear a familiar voice and this can sometimes bring them back, although the stories he tells her, I'm not sure”
“What do you mean?”
“Well if your the Mac he refers to him his stories then I take it you are in the military also?”
“Yes a Colonel in the Marine Corps”
“I guessed as much all I can say is that the two of you have lead a pretty exciting life up until know my staff are surprised you have managed to stay together for so long.”
“We're not a couple Doctor, just partners at JAG and good friends”
“Oh, my apologies, it just that the way he talks about you, we all thought...... please forgive me. Look the best thing right now is to continue to talk to her, but please make sure that Mr. Rabb looks after himself as well, we don't want him in a bed along side Mattie, do we”
“Thank you Doctor, I'll try my best”.
Mac walked back into the room. Harm was sitting back in the chair, holding Mattie's hand again.
Mac walked up behind him and placed her hands on his shoulders.
“What am I going to do Mac, what can I do to get her through his?”
“Being here for her and staying strong”
“I don't know if I can, I can't imagine not being around her and having her in my life now. How do I get through this?”
“You can do this Harm, I'm here for you.”
