Title - Separation, Spies and a Dog Part 2 of 3

Author - usmgrad

Harm is physically home but his mind hasn't quite made it.

Having "surprised" his wife by coming home Christmas Eve. Harm and Mac have spent time getting “reacquainted” and now . . .

Later that night

Mac woke to the sound of a car backfiring. She turned to see if it had woken her exhausted husband. He appeared to be slightly agitated, but not awake.

Harm was lingering somewhere between sleep and awake. He desperately wanted to remain asleep, but something pulled him in the other direction. Each step he took brought him closer to . . . where? He couldn't remember where he was.

The desert? He had a vague memory of a being in a humvee headed toward base camp. There were people all around but he felt separated, disconnected somehow like he didn't belong. He was talking to a corporal, something about going somewhere when all hell broke loose. There was gun fire, confusion. His ears where ringing, his arm stung, he saw blood. Had he been hit?

Mac was concerned, the more he “struggled” in his sleep the more she wondered if she should wake him. Instead she spoke softly to him in hopes of calming him down and lulling him back to sleep. It worked, after a while Harm stopped his tossing and was again sleeping peacefully.

An hour later

Mac had just fallen asleep only to be awoken to the sound of jets flying overhead. She still hadn't been able to sleep through the noise, unlike her pilot husband, who could sleep though anything. But tonight was different; the planes disrupted his sleep too.

Harm heard the sound of jets. He was so tired; he didn’t want to get up. His head hurt, his arm hurt, god he hoped he wasn't suppose to be flying. Where was he? There were lots of people around; someone was speaking to him . . . Keeter. He was with Jack Keeter. Jack was telling him about his latest adventure. Harm really wasn't interested, he needed to get somewhere. He told Jack something, he warned him, but Jack just laughed and threatened to tell - Mac . . .

Harm woke with a start.

He turned toward the sound, reached out and tentatively touched his companion's arm.

“What are you doing?”

(Shaken) “Making sure it's you.”

“Who did you think it was?”

"Didn't know where I was."

“You came home last night, your home Harm.”

“Why can't I move my legs?”

Mac looked toward the foot of the bed. “Charlie get down.”

“Who's Charlie?” Harm began to loose the battle to stay awake.

“Charlie's our dog. Go to sleep Harm we'll talk in the morning.” Mac did her best to comfort her semi-conscious husband.

Harm fought sleep just a moment longer, “you'll be here when I wake up, this isn't a dream?”

“We'll be here, we're not going anywhere. We'll be here.”

Mac continued to speak softly to her husband as he drifted back to sleep. She would stay awake for another hour and forty seven minutes, just watching him. Every so often she would speak softly making sure he knew where he was and that she loved him. She also decided if he wasn’t one hundred percent in the morning, she would be taking him to Bethesda.

The challenge lines blend in seamlessly. Well done cliffhanger. (NT)janlaw18:44:43 02/17/09 Tue
