Subject: Cage redesign... Share!

Since we're doing this whole "spring cleaning" bit, I figured I might as well do a major overhaul of the squirrel cage. I plan to coax my fiance into helping me take the whole thing outside for a good scrub (while the kids cool their tails in the CritterTrail 2) ... and while we're at it, we're going to move some things around.

I haven't really added anything new in a while, just moved a couple things here and there. So far I've got their plastic nesting box (it's big! huge! really!) a little pouch that they don't use (so far as I know) ... a couple of big ol' natural branches (I forget what kind) ... a little manzanita branch clipped to the side of the cage, a water dish, a cuttlebone, and a large plastic corner dish that I've been feeding everybody off of.

I've got a Wodent Wheel from Nemo's days, and Shelley gave me another wheel I have yet to try (she said they didn't use the one she sent) ... and I picked up a pair of little jeans from a garage sale. I plan to foist it on my sister and see if she can sew off the legs and fix it up so it can be hung in the cage... somewhere! I haven't figured out where yet! LOL.

Lemme know what other toys your kids have to play with, both inside and out of their cage. I'm also rotating and adding to the play furniture in the rest of the room...

Oh, one more thing. What do you guys use for bedding material? I'm almost out of what I've been using so far, and wanted to know if there's something better.

For bedding you can go to your nearest $ store and get 100% cotton balls..........less expensive and easy.

Moss is free, but you have to sap it in the microwavea couple of minutes to kill any bugs ... Oh yes, you have to live in the south. ;-)

[> [> [> Cotton Balls & moss -- KJ, Saturday, March 20, 10:57:08am

I've been using cotton balls for a while. Was just wondering if anyone else used something else.

As far as moss -- we live in Washington, but my fiance grew up in Atlanta, GA. We're going back there Mar. 28-Apr.1! Funny you should mention the south...

Gimme toy ideas, folks!

[> [> [> [> Re: Cotton Balls & moss 100%cotton batting -- gwsgrand, Saturday, March 20, 11:51:45am

I stocked up on 100%cotton batting and just about out now. I have now started using cotton balls but they still love that batting when I give it to them. As for toys my oldest one loves his large ty puppy but is not crazy about any thing else. The baby is not attached to much yet except me and HER CAGE. We have to close the door so she can not get in and do flips. Maybe when she is older she will change. I sure hope so. I have wooden ladders , wooden purches, a cute little chair (and she sits in it),large wood tree limbs and a play tunnel(she has chosen t sleep in it)and 2 nest boxes.

[> [> [> [> [> Blankies, doggies and straw nest baskets -- The Rock's Laura, Saturday, March 20, 03:25:42pm

Rocky has two beanie baby-type doggies in his cage and he loves them both. He usually goes and sits on them or near them when he has something special to nosh on. It's really cute. He also has a variety of woven finch nests that he loves to climb in and hide his goodies. I've got one little squirrel and there are 8 nest baskets/boxes, two sleeves, one shirt with two more sealed up sleeves and two knit pouches. He uses ever single one for one thing or another. No wonder he doesn't want to come out sometimes. He really likes his special home.

I've always given him 100% cotton but now I have to add little squares of teeshirt material. The other day I noticed he was trying to get under the teeshirt which is on the bottom of his cage and at one point he dragged the entire corner of the teeshirt into his box that's on the lower level. He had plenty of cotton to choose from but I think since he likes playing in my clothes so much he wanted the teeshirt material. So I cut the teeshirt into six inch squares and in a matter of minutes he was carrying some of the squares into his little house and you could here him patting and getting it situated. Then one piece blocked the hole and I heard a deep sigh and then snoring (well, not really).

My 7 month old Petey ( but I really think it should be Patty) is attached to HIS (HER) CAGE! I also have to close the door to make him (her) come out and play!

My 7 month old Petey ( but I really think it should be Patty) !
++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

You have that problem to. I thought my little squirrel was Rocky but I really think it should be Roxie. Doesn't matter really but boy do I feel like a fool.....what I thought was there I guess wasn't. Going to take another look tonight. Hubby is convinced it's Roxie since he says if it was Rocky I'd know without question since my little one is 18 months old.

Boy, if the gang on the other forum reads this I'm not going to hear the end of it.

(hi Joan, Chuck, Mishi etc. etc.)

Yes you would know Roxie was a Boy at age 18 months old. LOL this is just to funny. [ The best one yet is the cotton stuck on him. A classic] Not sure who that was. I think Leah needs to take a picture of Chuck and Mishi so you can compare. Leah where are you?????

..........know the difference!!! What can I say....I thought I saw some luggage a while back, little luggage but luggage....then I didn't think about it until I saw a male hamster on TV the other day and said hey, wait, Rocky's should be like that at some point after 18 months and well, they're not and never have been....so it's safe to say my little Rocky is Roxie. Pictures wouldn't hurt....Chuck, Mishi do you mind????
