**The Flying Squirrel Message Board**
	My name is Jill and I created this board in 1997 when I got my flying squirrel Charlie. He was such a wonderful pet. You can learn a lot about flying squirrels on this message board by posting your questions and going through the archives. Please keep to the subject. need help with "young" flyer -- RochelleTaylor, Wednesday, November 17, 02:10:33pm
I am searching for some information for the flying squirrel I just "got" two nights ago. My cat brought it home, but there are no external injuries anywhere on it's body. It is weak, and cannot walk at this time, but I have been nursing it. It will drink water from a syringe, and will eat nuts and seeds as long as they are broken into very small pieces and placed directly into it's mouth. It appears very calm and social. Elimination is good. I am a licensed Vet Tech, so I have access to good support. My question is this. It has a body size of 4.5 inches from nose to base of tail, then 3.5 inches for it's tail. I thought it to be an adult southern flyer, due to it's size. However, it seems to have a distinct penis, but no testicles at all. I am in lower MI. I didn't think it possible to have young squirrels at this time of the year. What do other's think? When do testicles normally begin to appear? And does anyone have any special recommendations for the nursing/rehabilitation? Thanks for your attention and help.

Thanks beverly! You put my mind at ease. Ive been trying to find a friend to place wingnut with but it's hard to find here in N.Y. Soon mabey I can travel to get a friend. until then I'm here for him. He comes and goes with this behavior so well need to watch him to keep his biting under control. him but hope it wont be too late when I finally find one. Until then I'm going to continue to control his loving behavior. And the pics also show that he's right where he belongs with his "little" friends too. He's aprox 3-4 months 12 to 16 weeks and I figured he'd be hanging by now but you showed me he is right on schedule. If you ever here of a fs in the New York or Long Island area please let me know. Pref. a male but I'm open to females too. Which ever may be best. Perhaps I'll come across a wild baby again in the spring That is a single sole in need of a home.
Yes I believe I'm a member of the other web sites as well. I find that this site answers the most when I post.

My fs is acting funny tonight. He seems to only want me and tries to bite while flipping his rear end and tail constantly. He always nibbled but also jumps from me to my husband and runs all around the room. Not tonight. He almost seems to be trying to hump me. He has a sock in his cage that he humps a lot but never triied to do it to me. Also he has a habit of running a circle in his cage all the time. But doesnt have a problem going in different directions otherwise. Is this normal and how do I stop the bitting and this behavior? Also I am very certian that wingnut is a male ( I think I've felt his friends several times) however I dont have a visual on them. He is several months old now. Is it possible that he is a she or is a criporckid? I dont know much about fs and am learning quickly. Thanks

I met a girl in Tampa FL she said she had two flyers one of each sex that she wanted to sell. She realized she doesn't have the time or proper caging for them. She asked if I knew of anyone whom would buy? I would love to take them but money is tight right now. I had a flying squirrel in my fireplace on Thursday (14 Oct 04) I guess he fell down the chimney. I got him out and he crawled all over me, didn't even try to run away or bite. Well, Logan, my 4 year old son decided that we had to keep him so I did some research on the net and got some general ideas... Today (16 Oct) we went to feed him and spend some time with him when we got home and he was dead. My son is pretty upset to say the least. He had just decided on a name for him ('Stitch' from Disney's Lilo and Stitch,) earlier. I don't know if he was already sick or falling down the chimney could have done it...

So to make a long story short I am trying to find another flying squirrel because they seem to be an excellent pet and after reading and research I would love to have another for my family, just not a wild one this time so there would be less chance of sickness or injury.

I had contacted Beverly from The Den Drey at Phantom Farm after finding her site on a Google search and she told me to ask here, so I would like to offer a public THANK YOU to Beverly for her help already!

hi, i have a flying squirrel and he jumped onto the cabinets and fell into a pot of grease. the grease was not hot but when i found him he was soaked and trying 2 dry off. I got a warm washcloth and wiped him down and then tried to dry him off with a towel. He is still soaked on his belly and face and i dont know if the grease might potentially hurt him. Please someone help me.

Hello everyone,

I recently got my first flying squirrel two days ago. I do squirrel rescue twice a year when they're in season and got this one by accident thinking it was just a baby grey. Now I'm not sure what to do. I've found some information and my best guess is that it is six to seven weeks old. I've started the bonding process and right now I am keeping her in a small pet carrier at night. All other times she is with me. I have one fox squirrell that is a house pet because she had health problems that would cause her to die in the wild, but she is about five pounds, so I'm thinking this is going to be a little different.

Any help regaurding a healthy diet, a good cage size and bar width would be really appreciated. I would also be gratefull for any little tidbits that you think would be helpful.

I have collected some live oak acorns from my parents house because I know they are chemical free. Their neighbors have two different types of oak trees, both of which produce huge acorns. They are also chemical free. Are all acorns OK? I know I have read something about live oak acorns so I have been offering those but if others are OK, I'd like to offer some of those big ones as well.

Is there a site with a fs feeding guide? I am sure there must be but I haven't found one.

What a day! Before 9am today, I had never seen a Flying Squirrel. Bringing in the paper this morning I noticed what looked like dog do-do on a corner of the stairs to our second story. I put on my glasses, turned on a light and thought I had a pregnet mouse delivering. It was sitting there trying to be inconspicutice and rolling into a ball.
I went to the garage to get a box to trap it and move it outside but it kept jumping out and ran down the stairs, then into the dinning room under some furiture. At this point I figured it was a baby squirrel. We've had squirrels in the house before through the fireplace and I usually corall them out the doors but this little guy was just kinda hiding in the open though still under a buffet. I got a pair of leather gloves and grabed the little "baby squirrel" and put it in the back yard. Case closed. Not quite!

After a late morning and afternoon thunder storms
I'm looking out the front door and I see a dark rodent running under the outside of the storm door. I open the door and in a corner of the inset trim of the open porch is another "baby squirrel" curling into a ball; or is it the same one? I had never seen a squirrel that small or so unafraid of people so I get my gloves and the box to catch it, thinking my friend that does animal rescues could take it. We have a few cats that prowl in the neighborhood and it looked like food to me (for the cats). When I picked it up and stood up it squirmed out of my hand (after biting my gloved hand twice) and jumped/flew 8 feet to the ground and I knew I was dealing with a flying squirrel!

Anyway, I recapured the little guy (or girl), put it in the box and the wife put a small towel in with it and it crawled into the towel and apeared to go to sleep. I called my animal rescue friend she said to try to let it go after dark and it might be OK but to watch it.

Next step: Google- Now I know more about flying squirrels than almost anybody (members of this board excepted). I tell the wife that people keep these thing as pets! I read some more web sites and call a local pet store. I couldn't believe they have a flying squirrel cage! By now the wife has fell in love with the big doey eyes and the little brown sleeping "tennis ball". So a 100 bucks for a cage and $40 more for a straw tube, straw house, a piece of log with a hole in it and an 8" squirrel cage and it seems we are commited.

I put the flyer in the set-up cage still in the towel and it just kept sleeping for a couple of hours. I walked by the cage and it was up in the food dish eating some peacans and corn on the cob. In the darkened room it looked like dog do-do again. It's sleeping now as it must have had a rough day running around on the ground. We have named it Do-Do.

I'm still on a hunt for a male fs on Long Island. One had come to the hospital but died before I knew about it. I need a friend for wingnut to play with. He likes to chew on us now ( not to hurt I dont think not yet at least) but he's doing very well and likes to jump all over us. But I feel he needs that companionship with another of the same species. Please let me know if there is anyone out there with babies or looking for a home for one.

While I realise not everyone here is in the same position, I'm going to make a $100 contribution to the 'Save Sabrina' fund. I think if each of us can contribute some multiple of a US bill ($1,$5,$10,$20,$50 or $100), it will go a long way toward helping Sabrina (and Steve) in the effort to be safe from the bureaucracy that is trying to harm her in the name of 'protecting' Canada from hoards of invading flying squirrels! (tongue firmly planted in cheek, of course ...) I know that times are tough, everywhere, but if you can, please drop a contribution in the mail!

Having just moved from Mi. to SC. I am just now encountering flying squirrels at my regular squirrel and bird feeders. I couldn't believe my eyes one night when while sitting on my patio I saw flashes of light and later discovered they were the charming little varmits this board is dedicated to. They visit most nights and of course are difficult to observe at night, though they will come now with a low wattage bulb in my patio light. It's finally over folks! We WIN! It was on July 6 that the Canadian Food Inspection Agency first ordered Sabrina, the baby northern flying squirrel, out of Canada. As I write this, little miss Sabrina is sleeping soundly under my shirt, as ever, oblivious to the controversy she unwittingly stirred.

Was there ever any doubt? To be honest, yes indeed.
Was it worth the effort? You betcha!
Would we go through this again? Yup!

The ruling is very, very clear - the Canadian Food Inspection Agency did not pass the quality test on any of the three points required to win an Interim Injunction for an Order to Remove From Canada. The didn't even come close. With such a weak case, one wonders why they pushed the issue all the way to the top. They knew they could not win, yet they kept going! The Crown Attorney even admitted to the judge that their case was extremely weak.

The judge even awarded costs! This whole court procedure has cost me over $20,000 Cdn. Clayton Ruby, our main lawyer, didn't even bother asking for costs, but the judge took it upon herself, apparently. Clayton has never heard of anyone getting costs from a Canadian federal court, so he never bothered asking for same. Now, "costs" will likely not mean recouping the full amount spent on lawyers, affidavit collection and veterinary services. We just don't know yet what "costs" means. I'll let the lawyers work this one out.

Can one read into this (the awarding of "costs") that the judge was not impressed at all with how the CFIA came after me with so much zeal, unbending in their resolve, unwilling to negotiate, sending the police to my door? Perhaps. Should we be awarded substantial costs, we will be issuing "refund" cheques to those who supported us with financial donations to the Save Sabrina fund.

The decision will be posted at http://reports.fja.gc.ca/fc/2004/pub/v2/ eventually.

So now Sabrina can get to the task at hand - enthralling and educating adults and children about flying squirrels and forest ecology. She's now a bouncing 95 grams and almost 4 months old - full of beans, being the "teenager" that she is. Her first ever public appearance will be at the Huron Fringe Field Naturalists' meeting near the end of the month.

This whole mess really put a "spaniard in the works" with regard to my nesting box project, presentations, trapping for OMNR's landscape genetics project, my newsletter "Squirrel Tales", and much more. Time to get back on track!

I've heard that the fs tend to chirp. Mine now does this. What does this mean? Is it like a bird that is happy and content, or does he need something? He seems happy and does this when he's running and climbing on us or jumping around. Occasionally when he's in his house I hear it to but never long. Will this pick up?

We had a Female for about six months then got a male. They didn't fight, but for the 1st couple weeks they stayed away from each other. We were worried at first they might not get along, but after the second week they started playing together and staying in the same box/ pouch together. We also checked with the exotic pet store where we got em both before we bought the second one and they said pairing them even male and female would beok. They get along really well now and play alot together...hope this helps

I posted in the Flyers Only board so bear with me if you saw it there too.

One of my flyers - I believe it is the neutered male (hard to tell the difference!) is acting strange today. He seems to have lost a little weight... though last fall, both squirrels lost a bit of weight and then gained it back. This usually coincides with the molt, so the "weight loss" might just be a change in the fur... I don't know. The other squirrel doesn't wake up for another hour or so, so I don't know how she's feeling.

THIS little guy, though, has one swollen eye. He seems a bit listless - drank water fine and I left him to it while in here to post for help.

I thought maybe he had hit it on something, scratched it, got in a fight with Merry, etc... What do you guys think??

Ive always thought that the coolest pet to have would be a squirrel. A couple weeks ago I went to the vet office to say hi to one of my friends which work there and they had 2 regular squirrels which were being kept and sick. I was able to feed them and they were just fun to play with. Anyways they might give one up to be a domestic pet because of an eye problem it has.

Anyways im not sure if that will work out so im curious if there are any breeders around the sacramento area of california. I would really like to own a pet squirrel and have around $600 saved to spend on a cage and whatever else I need. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Also when owning a squirrel in your own condo with no other pets. Would it be smart to let it roam the house with out a cage? Can they be trained like cats to go to the bathroom in the same spot?

Does anyone really see there fs eat a lot? Mine never seems to eat and never leaves any evidence so I fear he isnt eatting enough or at all. I leave fruit and he may have a grape or small piece of apple but it never seems to have been touched otherwise. He's very active and I cant imagine him with energy and looking so good without food. But I'm getting nervous. I give him LARGE assortments of food and he never seems interested. Is he eatting? When would I notice a difference in his energy level if he isnt?

Is amoxicillian ok to give fs? We had a misshap and wingnut seemed to have ripped his tail. I think he should on abs but I dont know which one is safe for him. Does anyone know? I soaked the tail in chlohexiderm disinfecant ( a sterile agent for surgical scrubbing) and placed some ab cream on it but he should have some internal abs as well. I have access to many types of them and want to make sure before I start him on some. Please respond soon! HELP!!!

My fs lost fur on his lower back towards his tail...the fur seems to be mixed in with his bedding, its been like this for a couple of months, and he doesnt seem to be sick. I was wondering if anyone has any info...maybe hes pulling it out himself or if he has some kind of bug....any info please email me or reply

Hi everyone! I came here often last year after I got my first flier Skittles. When I got her she was already one year old but very tame and sweet. She had been bottled raised and then bought by a family that spoiled her but fell into a difficult financial situation. Bad for them--good for me! She was a great pet and we got along right away.

I decided to get her a friend. Before I found Skittles I was on a wait list for a baby but that baby just never arrived. I had given up. Finally, several months after I got Skittles the pet store called to say they were in. I got a little boy and named him Skrat. He was close to 18 weeks when I got him. I tried bodning with him but he escaped after the first month. Shortly after, Skittles escaped to. The difference was, she return to her home at night or even land on me on my way for a midnight snack. I would just return her to her cage. (I had to buy a new cage because even though she'd lived in the cage her whole life, once she figured out how Skrat got out she'd follow.) I tried several times to catch Skrat but to no avail.

One night Skittles was playing with my daughter and I and just disappeared. She was jumping from me to the couch, running along the back of the couch, then jumping on my daughter at the other end. Then back to me again. When mydaughter got bored, she followed after her. I checked up on them and found them both watching TV in her room. Skittles cage was open and I later saw her return to her nes box. Unfortunately, I didn't close the cage immediately. She must have left again. I have not seen her since. It's been a few months and I have not heard her at night and though I keep putting food out, it never disappears.

On the other hand, a few months ago I caught Skrat in the bathroom. He bit the heck out of me in several places but he's home in an escape proof cage. He will stick his head out at night when I talk to him but if I try to offer him any treats he hides for hours. I try to get him to take food from my hand but he won't. I knew he wouldn't ever be as tame as Skittles since he was already so old hen I got him but I had hoped I would at least be able to gethim to be friendly enough to eat from my hand. Will he ever be? Did I lose too much time during the months he was away?

Anyone have ideas about Skittles? I hate to think that she's dead but rather got outside and tasted freedom. I live in South Texas and while they don't exist in the wild here it's not too far from where they do. Could she make it outside?

A pox on those federal bureaucrats who are driving him squirrelly, Steve Patterson says.

The Mississauga man's newly adopted American baby has been branded an illegal alien and ordered deported, even though Patterson followed all the apparent legal channels in bringing tiny 10-week-old Sabrina into the country.

He and Sabrina have formed a strong bond since he declared her at Canada Customs on June 26, and there's no way Patterson is going to give up his little ball of fluff � a northern flying squirrel from Wisconsin.

Least of all, he's not going to surrender Sabrina to Canadian Food Inspection Agency officials, fearing they will have her destroyed.

"I'll go to jail if I have to," Patterson said yesterday at his Mississauga townhouse, as the bug-eyed critter poked her head out from his vest pocket. About an hour later, two officials from the federal agency, backed up by two Peel police officers, appeared at the house, but by then Patterson had gone out, and they came away empty-handed.

Patterson, 51, began studying flying squirrels 10 years ago as a hobby. He began doing his own research and field work and has become a self-styled expert. Because he does presentations for various organizations, and wanted a live squirrel to use as an example. However, it's against the law to take one from the wild in Canada, or to breed them as pets, so Patterson obtained permits from both the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service and Ontario's natural resources ministry to legally import a northern flying squirrel. He picked up Sabrina in Indiana and at Canada Customs, his permits were inspected and the squirrel was allowed through. Ten days later he received a letter from the food inspection agency telling him that his squirrel was imported illegally. Why? In 2003, prairie dogs sold as pets by an Indiana supplier became infected with monkey pox from an imported Gambian rat. As a result, the United States banned the importation of African rodents; Ottawa did the same, but also squirrels.

Dr. Susan Wray of the Canadian food inspection agency said the department is merely trying its best to prevent the disease from spreading into Canada, and no exceptions can be made. Agency spokesperson Bruce D'Andrea said the maximum penalty for violating the order is $50,000 and/or up to six months in jail.

Please visit the above link, and read the article on the left hand side of the page, regarding the City of Santa Barbara, and their plan to poison squirrels at Shoreline Park. It's my understanding that the City of Santa Barbara Parks and Recreation Department is planning a poisoning campaign to kill the ground squirrels at Shoreline Park. These officials evidently have nuts where their brains belong, for any such action will not only make Shoreline Park useless in the short range (just imagine what the smell of the rotting bodies of a hundred or more ground squirrels will do, for park visitors ...), it will also certainly be a public relations nightmare for Santa Barbara's tourism commission.
I have relatives in Solvang, California, and each year I spend two weeks with them. Santa Barbara has been one of the cities I visit, shopping and dining at local restaurants, and spending perhaps $1500 to $2000, each year, on merchandise and meals. Should I find that Santa Barbara's P&R Department has followed through on their plan to eliminate the Shoreline Park squirrels, I can assure you that I, and a great number of my friends, will give Santa Barbara a wide berth, when we visit the West Coast; not so much because of the ground squirrels, but because of the idiocy of city officials who have so little regard for living creatures that they would even consider such a plan. To suggest that ground squirrel burrows are causing beach erosion is absurd, and is 'bad science', at best. I hope you will insist that the city P&R department come to their senses, and abandon this foolish plan. What Santa Barbara needs now are MORE SQUIRRELS! Then, there would not be so many NUTS running around, collecting a salary from the City of Santa Barbara's P&R Department!!!

Some people tell me that flyers will not mate with their siblings and others say diffrent. Right now I have Two cages side by side with Brother Sam in one and Sister Precious in the other. I would like them to be in the same cage but I don't want babies from the same family. I was told to remove the female when mating season is in just incase. Now I am confused and don't know what to do? Place them together or not?

At what age will the males nuts start to show? Sam is 10 months and I see nothing. Then I started to think IS Sam a female because all the nest has major cotton sticking out just like Precious does. I am pretty sure he is a male though. Got another flyer right before Charlie hit. We named him Gandoff he is older. We put him in Sams cage so he would not be lonely. However Sam is mean to him every night sam would make sounds and pounce his feet and fluff up. He will chase him into a nest then will be fine. Will they be ok? Some lady in Deltona has over 30 baby ground squirrels form the hurrican pray they all make it. Thanks Cindy
