The Flying Squirrel Message Board

My name is Jill and I created this board in 1997 when I got my flying squirrel Charlie. He was such a wonderful pet. You can learn a lot about flying squirrels on this message board by posting your questions and going through the archives. Please keep to the subject. • Cage, briskies food, and wheel available, in the NJ/NYC area -- Kris, Sunday, September 25, 08:28:10am
  Large cage. Measures 25" deep, 30" wide, overall height is 71.5" with the legs. Cage itself is about 45", and the legs could be shortened if you want. This cage was my flying squirrel's untill she passed at an old age. Has some climbing stuff still in it, but i can remove it if you like. This cage is homemade, but solid and well built. Could be painted or stained, just be aware of any health needs your pet might have in regards to the finish. It is currently unfinished pine. Asking $75 OBO. Also available is a wodent wheel, , and some briskies squirrel food. I am located in jersey city, very close to the holland tunnel. Walking distance from the Grove St. Path. • HUGE cage, travel cage, wheel, etc. for sale -- Dan, Saturday, September 17, 11:46:05pm
  My flying squirrel, Bella, passed away and I was considering buying a new friend, but the place I recently moved into does not allow pets. (even quiet and tidy little squirrels!) The cage I have measures 1 1/2 by 2 1/2 by 4 feet and usually sells for around $100 or more new and it's clean and in really good shape. There's also a travel cage, ferret wheel, food and water dishes, and a slew of supplies I used to make her food. It would be ideal if it could be picked up (I live in Cleveland, OH), but can ship if absolutely necessary (probably would have to disassemble at least the main cage).   Orchid's due date has passed, and she has no babies. I am certain Scalisti mated with her. About a week after mating, she had a seizure, so it's possible that had something to do with it. Orchid is fine now. Nibbles and Rakita might each be pregnant; I'm not sure. If so, they'll each probably only have one baby.

  It's true, less than 3 months after Orchid gave birth to Vanilla, Orchid mated again last night. Sorry for all the gory details, but both my males, Scalisti and Caramel, took part. I'm sure Scalisti will be the dad because he was on her first and for longer than Caramel. Babies should be due in mid-August.

  My husband & I have had our flyer for over a year. Recently when our flyer runs about on him or touches his skin my husband breaks out in a rash. Does anyone know why this happens or what could be causing it? Could my husband suddenly have become allergic? I really need some help in figuring this out.   Two years ago I adopted a pair of flying squirrels from someone in California. I believe these flyers originally came from Dennis.
  
  At the time I adopted them I was told they were about one and a half to two years old. This would make them about four years old.
  
  However, one-half of the pair died from an eye infection... I have only the female left. She is very lonely, and I will be moving (in-state) soon, and I'm not sure this is the appropriate home for her at this time. If anyone else in Washington state has a flyer that could be Merry's friend, please, PLEASE contact me.

  Another question from the newbie. Jill is just coming off formula. I'm still feeding it to her twice a day, but she's growing more interested in other foods. However, it seems like she's always hungry. She scarfs up any snacks I offer throughout a day and always eats her bowl clean. My question is, how large should a typical meal be? A tpyical meal for Jill might be medium-sized pieces of both brocolli and cauliflower along with a peeled grab and a few Cheerios. Is this not enough? Can my squirrel regulate her own diet, or will she eat herself into obesity if I give her too much food?

  I'm about to bring a young flying squirrel into my home, and I have a quick question about housing. I'm putting together my own cage, since I can't find one I like locally (at least not a big one like I want). I'm building it out of galvanized wire mesh with 1/2" spacing. Can anyone tell me whether or not I should place the mesh over the tray where the bedding will be kept? Or should I instead place the cage directly into the tray so that my squirrel can walk in the bedding? I would prefer the former, but if it would be too hard on her feet, I'd like to know so I can make the necessary changes.

  I have a squirrel in our area, he's much larger than regular squirrels. He is almost all black with a white nose. I've also seen them mixed with brown and black. Could you possibly tell me what we are seeing. We live in Milton Florida which is between Pensacola and Ft Walton Beach FL (The Panhandle of Florida).   Thanks a lot. I just don't want to give him anything that he can't have. I've only had him since Satuday, and I'm already REALLY attched. I've put him in a bonding pouch for the last 2 days, and seems to be getting better. I think I've figured out why he doesn't come to me at night, he knows im trying to get him in he's cage around the same time at night and he's more agile the time im ready to go to sleep. I'm scared to leave him out at night, for two reasons, him get hurt on something in my room, and he jump on top of me at night and it freak me out.

  I recently got a Flying Squirrel, Everette. I know they eat nuts, vegetables, and fruit. But what kind can and can't fed him, what are harmful to him? I know he's not supposed to eat Almonds. Kiwi's are toxic to some animals, are they alright for my Flying Squirrel? Also, he basically is NEVER in his cage at night, mostly becuase I can't catch him! He's too fast, he gets in the curtains and I can't get him, is there any kind of tricks I can do to get him down? I've tried to bribe him into his little sleeping bed, but it doesn't work!   I really want a Flying Squirrel and have been doing some research, but some of the stuff I've read is different then what others have said. One said only feed them one fruit a day. One said not to feed them to many nuts because they are too fattening. How do I know what to feed them and how much of each thing to feed them? How many mealworms, veggies, nuts, and fruits should they receive? I also found a site that sells food specifically made for Flying Squirrels; should I use this? Do they like yogurt drops and are they good for them? I really don't like putting my furry little friends in cages or leashes, but are there times when it would be better for them to be on a leash? Do they react badly to a lot of travelling? I will be going to and from college for the next couple of years and if it's bad for flyers to be moved from one place to the next then I'll try to get an apartment here in Indianapolis. Thanks to anyone and everyone that can help answer some of these questions.

  Orchid just had a baby on Sunday morning; and it's a girl. (Yippee!) Scalisti is the dad. The following evening, Scalisti and Rakita were, well, let's just say Rakita may be having babies in late May. Anyway, I plan on keeping Orchid's girl as a girlfriend for my other male, Caramel.

  Hello all. I have wanted a flying squirrel for a year or so now so I have been trying to find as much info about the cuties as I can. I was thrilled to find this board because you all seem like the best source of info I have found yet. I have a few questions if someone doesnt mind answering them. How long do the babies stay on milk? Do they change to solid food when they are ready or do I have to wean them off of it? Do baby fs ever not bond to their human buddies? Does working with them for hours every day and such ensure they will most likely bond? Are they loud at night? I knwo a few people said they are rather quiet but I live in an apt. and my fiance is a light sleeper. Does it affect the squirrel if I go away for a few (3 days) after it has grown used to its surroundings? I would not leave it unless it was used to being "at home" but I have friends that live a few hours away and we like to go spend the weekend with them once in awhile. Are there certain breeders I should steer clear of when looking for my new baby? And finally should I cover their cage during the day like people cover the cages of birds to block the sunlight or is just having a nest box ok for them? Sorry for the list of questions but I figured you all would be the best people to ask. Thanks for the info!!!!

  Is Mishi Pregnant?
  
  Chuck got thrown out of the nest box tonight! Guess I'd better set up his bachelor cage in the morning. I gave him a temporary sack tonight

  Well, he was in the nest this morning ... I think he snuck in while Mishi was asleep. I hung his sleeping bag just in case. If I find him in it, I'll move him out. She was very nasty last night about not wanting him near the nest box.

  Poor Chuck is beside himself ... here's the update. For the past 2 nights Chuck has slept alone in a coconut shell. I got him some Kleenex and he made a door. He was hanging on the side of the cage night before last looking like he was trying to kiss Mishi. She guards the box with her head hanging out glaring at Chuck. Poor guy doesn't understand why he can't snuggle. Anyway, he kept eyeing the entrance hole and suddenly went flying backward when Mishi sucker punched him. That was it ... I got his bachelor pad out and set it up for him. I'd check for 2 mornings for his little body and that is enough.
  Mishi chased him all over the room when they had out of cage time. That is, when she wasn't hanging her head out of the nest box daring him to even think about coming in. She repeatedly chased him out of the cage.
  
  Chuck spend a lot of time on me and I'd try to get him off when Mishi jumped on me ... I don't want to have one of those fights in my shirt! After a nap in my sleeve , I put Chuck in his cage alone. Boy is he upset with me! He kept trying to pull a finger ... or my whole hand thru the bars to chomp on! I hope he gets that I'm trying to save his little butt.
   
  This morning, he wanted out when he saw me; so I took him out. He ran to the big cage and wanted inside in the worst way. Mishi poked her head through the cotton door when she heard him. He was all over the cage and wouldn't stay on me when I get him. Mishi came out of the nest box looking like an overweight Buddha and standing guard like a pit bull. I was finally able to trap Chuck in a nut bowl and get him back in his cage. He was NOT happy.  But, he finally settled down to sleep after a few choice words for me.

  Chuck is Beside Himself
  Tonight I let Chuck out of the bachelor pad and he zips over to the home cage. Mishi flies out of the nest box and says a few choice words because Chuck flies back to me. Now, Chuck is racing around me and looking at me like I'm supposed to do something. Well, I have done something ... I've saved his little butt by bringing in the bachelor pad. The little ingrate!

  Well, Wingnuts surgery went off without a hitch. He's happy at home again. And a little lighter in the rear LOL. He has a swollen sack and that should disapate with time. As long as he leaves his stitches alone, He should have a full recovery and hopefully a new and improved additude. And a HAPPY MOTHER !! Anyway I just wanted to give you all a update and Thankyou for your imput.

• Squirrel Favouring Right Leg -- EFExotics, Thursday, March 03, 11:23:42pm
  This evening my girlfriend and I noticed that our little girl is favoring her right hind leg dramatically. She has it pulled up close to her body and is refusing to put any body weight on it.
  
  I restrained her to a pouch and did my best to look at her legs. She has mobility of the leg she's favoring, but its hard to tell if she has mobility of her paw or toes, but it seems like she doesn't.
  
  Its inhibiting her acrobatics, and she's become very clingy now, even after sundown. The problem was noticed probably about 9:30. We had her in the bonding pouch all afternoon and although it may've been a problem them, it didn't seem what way. She hasn't been out or about the room, but I supposed the possiblity exists she injured herself in her cage.
  
  She just a baby, probably about 11 weeks. The thought of calcium deficency causing hind leg paralysis briefly came to mind, and although we're working on weaning her from the bottle completely so she may be getting a bit less calcium (she doesn't seem to like the powder on her fruits always) it seems far too early for the disease to manifest itself so quickly.
  
  So I guess it looks like a vet visit may be in order. I thought, however, I'd make a post to see if anyone had any thoughts or their may be a pertinent part of this issue I'm overlooking.

  Does anyone know how to stop any bitting at all? My fs likes to play nibble and I'm afraid he's going to start to bite and mean it. I tell him no and he understands it however after a while he gets angry and will eventually bite then run away. I only had this happen to me once but, I expect it will happen again if I'm not carefull. He's very persistent and wants to nibble a lot. SOMEONE HELP!!!

The breeder that I was planning on getting a squirrel from has just informed me that they may not be recieving as many squirrels as hoped, and I realized that I was only on one waiting list. I have kept flying squirrels before and have experience taking care of the little critters. • New Babies! -- Judy C., Friday, February 18, 12:33:30am
  I'm just so excited. There are at least two tiny pink aliens in their box with a protective - but not fanitical - momma. They were born today in the Wild Bunch cage, but I will be moving them, nest box and all, tomorrow. Of course, it's going to be a while before I know what and how many I have, but I'll keep you posted.

  Just recently our little Peanut had a tramatizing experience. My co-worker went into her cage to show a visitor how cute she was. Well there was not peanut there and no signs of her. The cage was all closed up and the tomatoes that she had been given the night before were gone. We were frantic looking for her and then I remembered someone saying that they will go where they are comfortable and familar with. Well obviously she could not get back into her cage but her bonding pouch was on the shelf. Sure enough there she was, near what was left of her pouch. She had chewed it to pieces trying to get in. She wouldn't let us catch her because she was soooo scared. She bit one person and finally I put her nesting box out and she ran right in. She didn't come out for a whole day! I don't know if someone tryed to hold her or kidnap her and she got loose. I don't know where her tomatoes went because she never never never eats all of the tomatoes and she had a lot. THey weren't in her cage or on the shelf anywhere. It's a mystery.
  Well, not my cute cuddly Peanut that used to come sit in my lap all day won't even let me get her from her nesting box. She BITES and not a little warning bite that she has done now and again but a BITE! I don't know what to do for the poor little girl and I am not scared for my fingers too! Any suggestions out there? She'll take things like pecans and fruits from my hands but that's about it!
