Subject: Emergency! Dying squirrel

We have a squirrel down, in a corner of her litter pan. She does not seem strong enough to climb (I saw her fall from her food bowl into the pan) and my husband is currently making up a batch of the sugar/salt/water mix I used before. We have no syringes - the last one we had, the other squirrel chewed big holes in the tip and it was unusable.

I know someone said pedialyte was best for oral rehydration but what else can we do for her? She is in a little pouch that I'm carrying around, and she is shaking a little bit and grooming a lot.

>How old is this squirrel and what has it been eating? I need more info. If it is dehydrated its skin will tent and stay that way for a while when gently pulled up. If this is a baby at weaning I am guessing it needs calcium. I would give it esbilac formula regardless of its age (baby or adult) until the problem can be figured out. The esbilac formula has calcium. Keep it warm but not overly warm. Please keep us informed and sorry I didnt see this yesterday but hope it is in time to help!

[> [> Still hanging in there -- KJ, 10/ 1/05 1:18:23pm

Got some of the water solution into her last night, nursed her through the night (while nursing MYSELF - food poisoning) and she ate a little this morning, so I suppose we're starting to swing back into the mend.

This is an adult flyer. I figure about 4 years old. I couldn't really see if her skin was tenting (I think I kept grabbing the wrong part of the body. Those squirrels are notorious for that) but she did seem to feel better once given the rehydrating solution. Will see about the esbilac - I am not able to drive due to illness, will see if I can get someone else to help.

Hi Kassiy, My best advise is to go to NFSA.US. There is lots of information there about caring for rescued flying squirrels. Good luck with the little one.
