Well, congratulations! These forums are full of great information on flyer care/bonding/behavior/humor! Check out the archives for great information from past threads.

Other Flying Squirrel forums on voy are:

Also KatieDid has a great website on flyer vs glider care:
http://www.katiedid.net/sfspage.html

Between all three of the forums and Katie's site, you should be able to find the answer to just about any flyer question.

I'm not an expert, but hopefully this will get you on your way:

Spend ALOT of time with him/her (I do hate calling them an "it"). I recomend getting a large t-shirt and tucking the bottom into your pants. Then place the sleepy squirrel into the shirt. Hopefully he'll settle down for a nap and you can go about your day. The contact with your skin/scent/sound of your voice will do wonder's for socializing your little guy. A word of caution... don't forget about him and sit on him! Also, it's probabbly not wise to go outside of the house with a squirrel in your shirt. If he wakes up or gets spooked, he might escape!

Depending on the age of the squirrel when you got him, and how much time your spending with him bonding can take two weeks to months. The younger the squirrel the better, but don't let that discourage you. My first flyer Beacan came to me about 1yr old, and with alot of patience and time, he's quite friendly. Older flyer's will tend to be a little more independent, but can otherwise make great companions. Bonding is never really over... it's a life long commitment to spending time together, the more the better.

> 3) Are they relatively nice animals.

The are just enchanting to watch! I'd rather watch my furballs play than TV now. Though just like people they have diffrent personalities. Just ask anyone here! With proper socializtion when young they make wonderfull companions.

Again... look over the arcives of these forums, alot of valuable information can be gleaned from past discussions. Also look closely at the diet, and vitamine supplement needs of your little guy. Being nocturnal, they require calcium and vitame D supplements to stay happy and healthly.

(Love all of Tony's recommendations, especially about 'life long ... ) committment" to the bonding process. Just one more thing to add - I highly recommend you contact and join the National Flying Squirrel Association. This organisation is vital for providing fast replies to questions and suggestions for problem resolution.
