Subject: neutering

I have a 9 week old male flyer, and I just read that some people have their squirrels neutered. Is this a good idea? What are the benefits and how much does it roughly cost? Thanks!

(Castrating a flyer requires a vet with good rodent experience, and ...) a specialised knowledge of the anesthesia used for flyers. Castration is not necessary in most cases, unless you have a mixed gender pair, and want to allow them to play together, but don't want to raise pups. Some HOFs have had their males castrated, feeling that it makes the urine 'less smelly' - but I've got 5 adult males, and have never noticed a strong urine smell. Cleaning the 'latrine' area on a daily basis will keep any odors in check. BTW, I know of no female flyers that have been 'neutered', and as spaying requires far more complicated surgery, I doubt there are vets willing to do so.

If you're not already a member, I would like to suggest you contact the National Flying Squirrel Association. They can provide a list of flyer-savvy vets in your area.
