Cassiel is the ruler, of Saturday and Saturn, the planet of restriction and inhibition. The most distant and slowest moving of the visible planets. Saturn is where the descent into matter begins. On the Path of Return he is the Guardian of the Threshold, restricting entry into the heavenly realms to the most worthy. In mythology Saturn is characterized as Old Father Time with a scythe and hourglass, which led to an association with death, Saturn is a hard taskmaster - strict, demanding, and unforgiving of the frivolous. Bad reactions to the influence of Saturn can lead to isolation and inhibition. As the intelligence of Saturn, Cassiel is therefore known as the Angel of Tears. He is not, however, a punishing angel. He is here to help, but the lessons he has to teach us are the hard facts of life.
Cassiel's challenge is "How much do you care?" If your answer is "Enough to make the necessary effort," then we have won ourselves a powerful ally. Cassiel can transmute self-pity into humility, escapism into responsibility, listlessness into purpose. Letters of petition to Cassiel should be written on Saturdays. For invocations, use purple candles and silk. Saturn being slow-moving, Cassiel may take a long time to respond, and omens may not appear for several months.
