Late-Night Nashua: Where to eat, shop, play and get coffee after hours
by Seth Hoy
Who really gets everything done between 9 a.m. and 5 p.m?
Though these are the hours many stores, coffee shops and other much-needed services are open, the traditional bankers’ hours are not when most of us get our groceries, meals and life-restoring coffee. Despite the perception that Nashua is still a roll-up-the-streets-at-5-p.m. town, there are plenty of places willing to take care of your needs during the post-work, post-school, post-shuttling-around-the-kids time of the evening.
From bowling to Chinese food, from a martini to grocery shopping, here is your guide to getting it done late in the day without having to leave the area code.
Midnights and cups of coffee
If you don’t feel like getting all gussied up and going “out out,” sitting down for a cup of joe with a friend is like going out without the rabble of a noisy bar.
You can sit down and talk, catch up or leaf through a magazine without spending a bunch of money on a beer you may end up wearing anyway. Sure you can make coffee at home, but you won’t get a safety lid or the same ambiance.
Although Nashua is hurting for a late-night coffee house complete with funky lamps, comfy couches and that alterna girl wearing dark-rimmed glasses, you have to make due with what you have.
Dunkins, obviously, serves coffee at all hours but where else can you get a cup of coffee after 5 p.m.?

Table for two at ten
You never really realize how much time is of the essence until you’re standing in line at McDonalds at 10:31 a.m. and you hear the line, “I’m sorry, sir, but we stop serving breakfast at 10:30 a.m. What can I get you for lunch?” as you stare at the line of hash browns under the heat lamp.
Or when you make it to your favorite restaurant at 9:01 p.m. and are told the kitchen has closed. You don’t have to live like this! There are plenty of restaurants in Nashua where you can sit down for a meal after 9 p.m. Here are just a few:
• Applebees , 379 Amherst St., Nashua, 886-9292, 11 a.m. - 12:30 a.m.

Pizza
You can’t walk down the street without tripping over a restaurant selling a slice (or a full-fledged extra cheese and olives pie).
During the day.
But after the usual pizza delivery succession hour of 10 p.m., the pickings can get slim. Don’t worry, you don’t have to fall back on the chain pizza you lived on in college. Here are a few local places that can fill your carb cravings into the late night.

Shop til you drop
Maybe you just want a pair of tube socks at two in the morning?
Or maybe somebody in the house needs 1000 Popsicle sticks for a science fair project they didn’t mention until 9 p.m. was due tomorrow morning? Whatever you’re hankering, chances are you can find it at one of these late night stores—from the 24-hour pharmacy to Revlon lipstick.
Stores are considerably less crowded late at night, so if you can hold out until 10:45 p.m., the aisles of your favorite supermarket can be all yours.

Get it dirty
When the closet gets down to a tuxedo jacket and scuba pants you know it’s time to do laundry.
Unfortunately, that realization often sets in at the very last minute. Though local laundrymats aren’t open forever, you can still squeeze in a few loads after the local news.
If you’re on the go, don’t have a washer or dryer and have already run out of your favorite outfits, don’t lose hope—the last wash is at 8:30 p.m. (or, if you have more time in the morning, get that shirt sudsy as early as 7:30 a.m.).
• Gentle Touch Laundromat, 487 Amherst St, 882-6054, Monday - Saturday, 7:30 a.m. to 10 p.m. (last wash 8:30 p.m.), Sunday 8 - 9, (last wash 7:30 p.m.).
• Suds Cleaners, Pick-up and delivery only, 624-8096 , 8 a.m. - 8 p.m.
Signed, sealed, delivered
The postmark can be such a life saver.
Whether it’s your mom’s birthday card, your Visa bill or your 1040EZ, sometimes you need today’s date on your envelopes. So how late can you drop off your letters?
The city’s downtown post office, 38 Spring St., 882-7515, is only open from 8 a.m. until 5 p.m. Monday through Friday (from 9 a.m. to noon on Saturday). But if you drive around to the back door between 5 and 5:45 p.m, chances are you’ll make it.
Other places where you can drop off the late letters:
• Box at 20 Trafalgar Square, pick-up, 5:30 p.m.
• Box at 8 Prospect St., pick-up, 6 p.m.
• Box at corner of Temple and East Pearl, pick-up, 6 p.m
• Box at Rivier College, pick-up, 6 p.m
Need to get a package on its way:
• Kinkos/Fed-ex, 443 Amherst St, 595-2679 , last pick ups—for overnight, 7 p.m.; for ground, 6 p.m.
Check, please
There’s a reason they’re called “bankers’ hours.”
Unfortunately for us living in the 24-hour world, the idea of a bank that can’t deposit our paycheck after 5 p.m. seems a little quaint. While most banks in the city do keep to a 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., weekdays, schedule, some do offer extra hours a few days a week.
• Bank of New Hampshire, 191 Main St, 577-5040, is open on Saturdays from 9 a.m. to noon and on Thursdays from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m.
• Bank of America, 157 Main Street, 595-7380, is open on Saturdays from 9 a.m. to noon and on Thursdays from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m.
Hey, watch it, buddy
What better way to end a day than with a movie?
Even though Nashua doesn’t technically have a movie theater, most of our neighboring towns do and the last showings can begin as late as the 10 p.m. hour (giving even workaholics a chance to see a flick close to home).
• AMC Tyngsboro 12, 440 Middlesex Road, Mass., (978) 649-3980. Last show is 8:20 p.m., weekdays during the school year and during summer 10:30 -10:45 p.m.
• Premier 8 Theatres, Post. Rd Plz Rt 101A, Merrimack, 882-5544, Friday - Monday, (last showing) 9:30 p.m.
Or, have your own midnight feature by picking up a movie to watch at home.
• Blockbuster Video, 8 Spit Brook Road, Sunday - Thursday, 10 -11, Friday and Saturday, 10-midnight
• Video Thunder, 300 Main St., 886-8633,10 a.m. - midnight
