Subject: Is this a Southern expression? What does it mean?

I have heard some southerners use an expression "I love her for that", usually right after they've described some person's glaring character defect.

Example: "She got so drunk at the party, she made a fool of herself, but I love her for that."
Example: "He is an obnoxious braggart, and I love him for that."

Has anyone heard this? What is the meaning of this? Is it common? Am I just hearing things?
